I'd like to believe that using a 10mm socket on a nominally 9.525mm fastener or glow plug is close enough to keep me out of the "suspected user of hard drugs" and "some people shouldn't own tools" categories! (Ha!)LOL
@IDIBRONCO I see that now. I did the whole job using 10mm on them b/c seemed like a solid fit. I see why now: 3/8" = 0.375" = 9.525 mm. 3/8" would have been better.
@tbowker
"15 seconds" I didn't us a stopwatch. I was too overjoyed just to see it work. Mighta been only 11.
Meter: My fluke died and I bought this China meter because it also measures large DC current (not 200A tho) at a reasonable price.
UNI-T UT210D Digital AC/DC...
@reset2
Could not find any info about the difference between then. Based on availability, it seemed clear it is Ford's standard going forward.
If these fail I'll go to one of the alternate non-standard GP solutions others have documented.
@Bart F-350
Clicking (pulses of glow) *after* a decent amount of "Wait To Start" (solid glowing) is normal I think. In my case, there was only a blink of "Wait To Start", then just clicking.
The parallel resistance of the glow plugs changes as they heat up. This is how the controller...
For any who are just getting started:
I love having a factory turbo IDI (VIN C / IDIT) except when it is glow plug time. Plugs 5 & 7 suck because the turbo is blocking access. For any new to this game, here's my tool list to help the job suck less:
Pliers, long, curved needlenose...
Bottom line: After 8 new (and verified) ZD-29 plugs and with a 37 degree temperature, the truck glowed a solid 15 seconds and started easily like it was a summer day!
None of the old (2019) plugs were open or swollen, but they measured all over the place and two were unstable. No wonder the...
Time to do GPs and saw the lack of ZD-9 availability and the controversy about ZD-29s, so I thought I'd try them and start a thread.
I bought 8+1 from Rock Auto to minimize the chance of counterfeits. They came in individually sealed Ford Motorcraft bags. The bags say, "Made in Germany". The...
Thanks for the offers to help. There may come a time I make the drive, get a hotel room, and take someone up on that offer. Hanging out for a day or two with some of the senior members of this forum would be pretty cool all by itself.
I made several calls, and so far, I haven't found anyone...
IDI Shop in Tennessee for Head Gasket Job?
I am in middle Tennessee, just south of Nashville, with a '93 IDIT. Pretty sure the passenger side head gasket is leaking coolant. I could do this myself, but don't have the garage or concrete, so it would be more challenge than I want at my age...
I have owned my IDIT since 2008 and this forum is my #1 source of wisdom about it. Earlier this year I asked a question and felt I got some decent responses that helped me. Whoever runs it ultimately, I selfishly hope this content and culture of helping is not lost.
Assuming @typ4 is still kicking, I bought my last cap, hose, & o-ring kit from him and it has been great. Also, consider using the "Zicam Bottle Cap" method when installing the o-rings to minimize nicking them. Procedure is in the tech stickies.
