A few products come to mind. Many people are using fluid film. I personally have used Castle Endura. Another interesting product which is extremely messy is KEL Black Oil. It is basically spray tar. I think used engine oil is probably the cheapest however.
I have a couple of ideas of what the noise can be. Assuming the wrist pins and bottom end are sound, check for a cracked flexplate or possibly the wrong head gaskets installed that would make the pistons hit the gaskets at the top of the stoke. Those are the only ideas I have. Best of luck.
