Project Thread: 89 F250 Franken Truck

Ok folks, this is gonna be a sad post. I got the truck running and driving last week, but I fell in love with my current daily driver: My dad's 1989 Toyota Pickup. You know where this is going. I sold the ford today. I figured for my usage, a 1984-2002 4Runner would be a better use of my...

    C6 fluid change advice?

The torque converter does have a drain.

Update: Engine and transmission installed. Engine ran perfect out of the truck just before we installed it. Still need to hook up a few lines and put the radiator back in. Just in time, I will turn 16 next week. Wish me luck on the test! Thanks for all your advice and help! -CalIDI

Went to put the engine in yesterday and found a decent groove in the rear sealing surface of the crank while doing the main seal and oil pan. Also after looking at my felpro seal BS 40011 it is a dual lip design without a spring and it appears damaged so I won't be using it. I ordered the...

UPDATE: Engine and transmission removed. Since we can't turn the engine over we had to pull the transmission in order to pull the engine out and remove the torque converter on the ground. I decided to do main seals also so we will be doing those as well. Will post pics later. Hopefully going to...

Oil cooler is reassembled. It went together with a surprising lack of effort, though it was still quite firm. I guess I used enough vaseline. I used the ratchet strap and blocks of wood method. Quick question before I install it tomorrow (hopefully) The gaskets I have don't have any extra...

    Jesus Freak's WMO tow truck

IIRC a buddy of mine who does tractor servicing regularly drains the hydraulic fluid directly into his tank and drives home. Saves him having to dispose of it and it works excellently. Its usually quite clean. He drives a 94 PSD, so an IDI should swallow it easily. Definitely check if it is...

Zd29s vs Zd9s...for the inquiring mind...

When I did GPs in my 7.3 the ZD29s I bought from RA came in a Ford Motorcraft bag and had the appropriate labels on it. I vote for wrong item sent. What did the packaging say? -CalIDI

Could you make an IDI that had wet sleeves and 6.9 pistons by using a 7.3 block? I am guessing that this is impossible?

I wish it could. That would be amazing. I believe you could sleeve a 7.3 down to a 6.9 but I don't think they are set up for wet sleeves. -CalIDI

    Air filter lid

Maybe @Thewespaul from Classic Diesel Designs has one laying around. He is in Texas too. There is three of them on California craigslist right now, so maybe check in your area to see if anyone is parting out an IDI, or simply has an extra. Looks like you've got a very nice sound system, in the...

I would have made adapter plates and then pressurized the coolant passages with approx. 13psi, filled the oil passage with water, and watched for bubbles. Then dry it like crazy and use carb cleaner (won't hurt rubber) to force the residual water out, and then flush it with oil. It seems like...

Thanks for the tips! I've used that IDIonline place before. Good info right there. I don't have a press yet, so I may use a bench and a jack, or ratchet strap and wooden blocks. Hopefully in a couple of days the oil cooler will be properly assembled, and bolted to the engine. Then its just...

Quick update Oil cooler is apart, tool a little ingenuity and a slight amount of heat to loosen up the OEM rubber. Looks to be in good condition internally. I could not clear out the center tube, but all of the other passages in the main body are clear. I figured one partially blocked passage...

    Newb from Fort Worth Texas

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like a super cool truck. Pictures would be welcome. For our project trucks many of us create a build thread where we outline the truck, goals, and current position, and then give and get advice on what to do and in what order. Its a bit less messy that way. That...
