During recent years, archeologists have found prehistoric rock shelters and artifacts indicating that the area was a habitation site during the early Archaic period.

Archaeologists refer to the period between about 10,500 to about 3,000 years before the present as the Archaic period.
In Alabama, as well as across eastern North America, the way of life for Native Americans began to change around 8500 BC, a date that roughly corresponds with the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age.
Archaic peoples collected nuts from hickory, oak, and chestnut trees; native fruits such as blackberries, muscadines, and persimmons; and greens such as pokeweed. At archaeological sites where preservation is good, scientists have found bones of a large variety of animals, indicating that Archaic people ate deer, turkey, squirrel, raccoon, rabbit, turtle, snake, small birds, and many other types of animals.

The Pinhoti National Trail System runs for 102 miles through the Talladega National Forest, and the 29-mile Talladega Scenic Mile Drive accesses Alabama's highest point, Cheaha Mountain (2,407 feet), located within Cheaha State Park in the northern Shoal Creek District.

The Talladega National Forest is located in the U.S. state of Alabama and covers 392,567 acres (613.39 sq mi, or 1,588.66 km2) at the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains.[1]

This was a nice place to hike. With all the hikes I've been on,I step wrong in here on this relatively flat and mild trail and hurt my ankle to the point where I had to use a cane for a couple weeks.A minor sprain I suppose.I got over it but while on vacation that wasn't much fun.Alabama smells funny.A very unique and slightly unpleasant smell. So warm here in the winter months.Great place to hang out.
