The cavern was discovered by John Knox and his hunting dog in 1862.[3][4] Knox did not want the cave to be exploited by the Union or Confederate governments as a possible source of saltpeter, so he kept the cave's existence quiet until 1867. Knox put an advertisement in the Springfield paper for someone to explore the cave, and it was first explored on February 14, 1867. On February 27, almost two weeks later, the Springfield Women's Athletic Club explored the cave.

The caverns were used as a speakeasy during the Prohibition years and hosted music concerts during the 1950s and 1960s[7] The shows were broadcast on KGBX radio in the 1970s.

Missouri Indians & the State’s Namesake

The state of Missouri and the Missouri River derive their names from the Missouria tribe. In the language of the Illinois Indians, Missouria roughly translates to: “One who has dugout canoes.” In their own language, the Missouria called themselves Niuachi, meaning: “People of the river's mouth.”

According to the enthnographer James Mooney, the population of the tribe was about 200 families in 1702; 1000 people in 1780; 300 in 1805; 80 in 1829, when they were living with the Otoe; and 13 in 1910.
