So I bought this F350 last week. Its a 1986 2wd dually with 6.9 idi and odo reads 48000 miles. I paid 3k for it. It runs decent but I’m gonna go ahead and put new injectors, IP, glowplugs and fuel pump in it. Just curious if I made an alright deal at 3k.

Any rust? None of my business, but why put another 1k in it for injectors and injection pump if it runs OK now? One thing I noticed is that the front clip has been changed, I would check that the previous owner just liked the OBS front clip and ensure it wasn't in a collision.

Two pictures are tough to judge a purchase on, but if it’s all around as good as those two pictures suggest, and as discussed above it wasn’t in a disastrous collision and rebuilt with tape and zip ties, you stole it.

He says he hated the look of the original clips. As far as injectors go, I have plans on putting a turbo on it plus I figured after 32 years it wouldn’t hurt to update the fuel system.

It’s in very good shape. The carpet is trashed but I have a new matching carpet made for this truck on the way. 175 bucks. The only other issue is his wife hit the mailbox with fender flare so that’s cracked. No rust on truck or frame.

I think you did well. I wouldnt jump straight into replacing the pump and injectors because if it isn’t giving you issues you’re probably fine for many more miles to come. If you want the peace of mind, you can pull the injectors out and I can clean them up test them, and reset the pressures as needed. Much cheaper than buying a new set

Before adding any more fuel I would recommend buying and installing a quality pyrometer, this gauge measures the temperature of your exhaust so you know you aren’t melting internals, since unburnt fuel=high exhaust gas temps.

With the stock pump, you can simply turn a screw for more fuel volume. The stock injectors are not much of a restriction till about triple the stock power level.

The best upgrade you can do for a stock engine is to get it timed, as well as have your injectors pressure matched. If you have injectors firing at different pressures, you have different volumes of fuel being delivered to each cylinder, as well as combustion happening at different times. This makes it so one cylinder fights the other since this is a four stroke engine, and kills power.

Hope that explains a bit of it;Sweet

:***:

Yeahhhhh... That smells like bullsh*t. PO's will say anything to get their vehicles out the door. I'm fairly confident he rear ended someone, and he combined body panels from a different truck. You should have someone check the frame, just to make sure it ain't tweaked. How does the wear on the tires look?

Post a picture of the brake and accelerator pedal. That'll tell us if you have a 48K truck or a 148K truck.

You posted on the OilBurners forum asking if you got a deal. I'm not going to sugar coat it, but unless that engine bay is as clean as when it drove off the lot in 1986, and there isn't any rust, I wouldn't pay $3K for a 2wd quad cab non-turbo IDI with 148K. Especially if it is running odd, which is inspiring you to replace the IP, injectors, etc. That's a major investment, which if it was time to replace fuel injection parts, it should have brought the price down a bit.

Regardless, should be a fun project truck. IDI's are fun. Hopefully you won't get IDI-Addiction, which starts with a truck, and ends with you having excess engines and vehicles in your garage to the chagrin of your family.

imho, that's some awful advice to give a newb with no equipment on checking spray pattern or parts injectors to canibalize springs and shims from.
Injectiors on these motors are essentially a calibrated pressure relief valve. there's really no magic happening other than they perform best as a batch popping off at a consistent pressure and with the same pattern. no other magic happening there. the problem enters when the rebuilder is only concerned with cleaning up the parts and putting them back together to perform under general minimum guidelines. Unless the rebuilder is putting in new needles and nozzles(those are the wear items), you are throwing away money. currently who is doing that? Typ4(Russ), R&D, and maybe Conestoga(unconfirmed) are the only ones doing so. How do you know? the price would be a great indicator. The magic happens with the injection pump and that is why they should be replaced together at the same time. So, is it a good idea to change out a pump and injectors if you don't have issues? depends. key thing is your fuel mileage. anything close to 10mpg is a clear indicator you have pump and maybe injector problems. you can still be running smooth and have ****** mileage from an old pump. rough idle and rough operation are also urgent indicators of replacement. start with a mileage check from a few fillups to use as a baseline and a pic under the hood to show us ithe condition of the motor will help greatly too.
good luck :D
