I called a buddy and got his head unit model, he has a Pioneer AVH-3400NEX.

I don't know anything about problems with it, he loves the thing.

Prior to that he had a DEH-9800.

This is in his RX-7, and the stereo equipment is worth well over the cost of the car. LOL

I'm the guy with the Boss unit. It's only been 2 months but still working fine.
I'm also in an OBS and your comment on the dash pad, while true, isn't really a concern since you can space it out easily with the different locking tabs of the stereo mount.

Here it is in the dash.

One nice feature is that you can set the screen to open to a specific angle si it's easier to see in sunlight.

Thanks! What model number is it? Can you use it without activating the LCD display?

Thanks, but at around $600, I think that I'll pass...

I am using a cheapo Dual unit from Walmart, I think it was $147. Overall I am happy with it, it hasn't had any issues but you will want an amp to power the speakers, the built in one is very weak. The install was easy and yes you can pull it out a little so the screen doesn't hit the dash pad. The backup camera is a huge plus as well as the SD slot and BT streaming. For the price it has been great and is cheap enough that if it fails I can put another one it.

The only complaint I have is the weak amplifier, I have not added an amp yet but the truck is used mostly around the farm, I did this unit for the backup camera.

Yes, you can leave the screen in or out for most functions but with limited functionality and the remote isn't great, but it works.

Hows the AM radio reception? I've found that it varies wildly, but with price not really a part of the equation.
(I know I'm lame with AM but I like our local sports radio stations)

I would also love to upgrade to a camera for trailer hook-ups. I'm pretty good at it after 13 years but why not use a little tech since we have it and it's so cheap??

I have no idea on AM reception, the FM works fine. My wife listens to AM talk radio, but she streams it from her phone.

That's really quite true...our cheapest radio at work has the best overall reception both AM/FM. And the fancy ones suck!
