You can get these for under $50 on ebay. Should be able to make it work on idi, may need a fitting or two.
Comes with shut off valves.

I’d rather spend a little more for the Napa one in the link I posted. Plus, the matching filters from Napa come precharged with SCAs. It looks sturdier than that eBay one too.

It’s as stout as the Napa or more (3/4 machined) and if you plumb it the way it is in the article i’d Like to know how much you spend in fittings. The one I bought came with a Donaldson P554685 filter. The filter is 11/16 x 16 same as Napa. No argument about your choice, just want you to know I wouldn’t recommend something I had no experience with.

Coolant needs to be replaced every couple years or so. If that's not done it will become acidic and will start eating metal,creating rust. Your mess is from a lack of maintenance. I have seen much worse.

I saw some of this last year and did a band aid of just replacing a couple gallons. I was in a parking lot so I couldn’t do much more than that.

The really yucky stuff seems to spill into the overflow. I pulled the bottle last year and dumped it out (into a container of course) and refilled it, after doing a slosh rinse. I should probably do that again.

Yes it needs real servicing but it will just have to wait.

If you do a filter, skip the bypass style. Do a full flow.

Bypass filters a small percentage at a time.
Per example, like the kit linked above.
A full flow is just that. Typically will go in the feed line to the heater core (which is "on" constantly, even if using a shutoff valve) that way its seeing a lot of coolant flow.
Most of the other threads here on coolant filters will be full flow. Just look at the filter specs, some will state a orifice is used to slow flow.

Gotcha. I'm assuming that the disadvantage of the non bypass system is that if the filter were to stop flowing, you'd, at best, have a serious problem that would need immediate attention. Not so much with the bypass... don't get me wrong, I'm all for maximum filtration, just being devil's advocate...

No, heater would just weaken. Which is what many use as a indicator to change the filter.
