^^^Check air filter. If that checks out, might want to drop in a new fuel filter filled with seafoam. That’ll clean up the injectors & pump very well if you run it for a minute & let it set overnight.
Sounds like your IP might be acting up a little.

Nothing crazy about that. IDI's won't always be first to arrive, but they WILL get you there.

Right on. I once drove my IDI from Los Angeles to Newfoundland, and we found out we had a cracked block near Lans Aux Meadows. Even though most other engines would be an immediate death sentence, we made some adjustments, and we were able to limp my IDI back to Los Angeles.

Still running smooth. When I crossed the Colorado border though I looked in the rear view mirror and the truck put out a massive black cloud that covered both lanes. Just once that I saw. The didnt hear anything or see anything, what could that have been?

BTW we have dropped south and are cruising i-70 now.

Temporary puff, or was it a constant trail?

If you are cruising on I-70 to Denver, you are likely above 5000 ft. I've tuned my IDI for sea level, and I'll assume since you are from Oregon, you probably tuned it under 2000 ft as well. Whenever I get up above 6000ft elevation, there is a bit of smoke, and on I-70, it can get up to 9000 ft in the highest passes. It's likely you will have some smoke along the way, depending on how you use the accelerator.

I'm from Oregon also, I notice even just going up over the cascades some serious increase in smoke, especially when I was n/a lol it's likely altitude. What's your smoke levels egts climb fast when starving for air

. the crazy part is I feel more confident driving my old **** than I do a new electronic truck.

For 2017 Hot Rod Power Tour our Mustang decided it did not want to go again so we took our 2001 PSD - 9K miles. I chased belt squeal until I replaced the belt tensioner - cannot adjust the belt. A parking brake assembly fell apart and got ground up. Had a little tread separation. Had an intermittent howl until I replaced the fan clutch. And now I won't take it out of town because it randomly seems to loose half the engine, but returns to normal with a reboot - engine off engine restart. There are a few pics at the bottom of this album.

I still don't expect to have the Mustang power train replaced so we are taking the 84/89/93 IDI this year.

You still haven't fixed that?......

No. I am seriously considering putting LEDs in the cockpit from two injector high sides and eight low sides to try to get a better definition of what is happening.

And maybe replacing everything under the valve covers just for drill. Even tho I am fundamentally opposed to throwing parts at a symptom.

Last night we made it an hour and half passed Denver, Colorado. I had planned to pitch the tent at a rest area but when we pulled in there were "no camping" signs.

With a quick google search at 2 AM we found the city of Brush municipal campground 80 miles East of Denver. It was on our route, rt 76. "first night free" camping with water, electric at every parking spot, and showers! I wish every exit or town had municipal campground.

It was just a quick ****. A real ********* quick ****. Almost like a backfire.

Ive never messed with my injection pump because it always seemed to run good for the 2 years Ive owned it. Not sure of its age or history. Same with timing.
In Oregon I live at 4500 ft and frequent mountain passes, its never done this.
Before I left home I put on a brand new giant Donaldson b085011 filter and a fresh fuel filter.

You could also run a heavy dose of power service diesel kleen (gray bottle) with your next fill up. Dump a quart in fuel and that will probably clean it up as well.
Looks like a fun trip!

Do the harnesses first.

Been using it with every fill. Not at such a strong dose though.

The first time I did I80 after I installed the 89 IDI I was west bound and by the time I got to the Eisenhower summit it was making so much black soot I lost the big rig behind me. The turbo has eliminate the soot.
