So you are getting 12v to it and still notice no change in engine tone? IIRC energizing the advance should engage high idle (or maybe its the other way), but it should have a louder more clackity idle (more like a 7.3 powerstroke) with it advanced.

Maybe someone on here as a good used IP for cheap?

Nope I can’t say I hear a difference. Maybe it’s out of time so much that even that isn’t making a noticable difference.

I will have to find a curved wrench to fit that hard to reach bolt, if I hope to try to adjust timing myself. I don’t have the means to make one like many people do.

The awful 25mph+ gusts are gone now. I’ll know better in an couple hours once I (try to) get up to highway speed again.

It should be noticeable, high idle energizes separately unless you have the factory harness still connected and it back feeds to the high idle. With the engine off you should hear it click when you jump power to it. I’ve got three or four good used pumps if you need one.

So you’re saying giving the advance a separate switched power source will ensure it’s on? Can do. As mentioned, I do have a relay I added for auxiliary power needs on ignition switches power.

I’ll also try a few second test power connection directly to the battery then, just to see if I hear a click. Normal key turns makes the loud click of the glow plug relay happen (it’s on the controller right now, not my push button). I wouldn’t be able to hear it from the cab anyway I’m sure.

I guess I need to go back down to Texas. It might have been you, or some else, around San Antonio who’s on the timing registry. I’m up in SE Oklahoma right.

Yep I’m north of sa so probably me you saw in the registry. I would give it 12v from that switched power, it won’t be much load.

Okay, so it clicks on/off with direct power from the battery.

But it also clicks on/off with the toggle switch I put where the temp sensor switch normally is on the harness, when the key is turned.

So in theory it should always get power with it it running since the toggle switch is forcing it to always be on as if it’s cold.

My theory is it’s so out of time that cold advance just isn’t enough to overcome it.

I guess I’ll head back south next month and head your way, unless somebody else chimes in closer up here, or further north/NE.

Very likely. Mine was WAY off. Depending on how far north east you are Conestoga Diesel could time it for you too, but he's in PA.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Wes, just simply if you're closer to PA or headed that way.

It might be my imagination but city wise on a hill it felt different today. No awful wind like yesterday. I have been tinkering with the kickdown cable adjustment screw at the throttle. It probably needs to be a bit different when towing vs not, at least if timing is off.

PA is a long way off but I do plan to get up that way. I guess I will try to stay off of interstates unless I can maintain 50-55 at least. Although in western states where limits were 75+, they had special signs saying 45 minimum. Dunno if that applies everywhere or not.

Haha yeah Texas is big state, not a quick trip for most people. I’ll be happy to help you out if you find yourself nearby, I’ll let you know if I’m ever out your way as well.

While I’m not sure if it’s got more power, it might be getting better mileage. Hard to tell yet. I did an extra top off after it initially kicked off. But I have been adding diesel kleen. I also got a bottle of MMO and put some in too just now.

I’ll know better in a few weeks. I’m almost to my camping are for the next 2 weeks. I don’t go far daily mostly.

I don’t have a wrench yet to reach the hard nut on the passenger side, so I have not touched the pump timing, but I did finally grab a paper towel to wipe away gunk and I checked the timing marks.

It’s a bit retarted from default it looks like. Left side of the pic is passenger side. Turning the pump’s line toward passenger side advances, correct?

This is looking straight down, standing in front of the truck.

Seller told me the pump was newer. I don’t know the exact age or miles but I did spot a “standard” sticker on the side while nosing around in there this morning.

Get a 3/4 wrench and turn it the same width just on the side of the line when you get a chance

The line should be on the passenger side of the line on the cover. Looks like you’re on the drivers side now but maybe the photo got inverted when uploaded?

Yes, the IP pump line is currently on the drivers side of the cover line, just as shown.

I wonder if a stubby wrench would work without having to butcher a standard 9/16 or 14mm one.
