Cross country roadtrip - Oregon to Pennsylvania

I loaded up my truck with all the tools, a tent, the dog and fiance in training. We are on our way from Southern Oregon across the US to Eastern Pennsylvania.

The truck is in the best condition I could get it with the time I was given. Fresh oil change, new oil gauge, topped off all fluids, fresh fuel filter, new glow plugs, fresh powermaster 9050 starter, two new batteries and all lights working.

I am the best man at my good friend's wedding and need to make it to Philadelphia in time for the bachelor party.

I am originally from PA and will get to visit with many friends and family. I am anticipating seeing my mother, who recently was diagnosed with ****** cancer and is undergoing chemo therapy. The last time I saw her she was fine, now she is bald. This visit will be a tough one to say the least.

We are about 6 hours into the trip and everything is running smooth so far. We just made it to I-80 which will be our main route. As I type we are stopped at a "Wingers" restaraunt in Winnemucca, NV.

I thought to make this post because the trip could be pretty interesting. I have driven the country before but never in an old single cab truck like this. I'll do my best to get some good pictures and stories!

back in 2012 I did the I-80 run to go to the MI rally. met up with quite a few OBN members throughout the trip. previously, I've driven cross country a few times in my F450 carrier. it sure is different in a crew-cab truck compared to a reg cab truck.
here's a pic of me somewhere in Wyo. the air is thick with haze from the Colorado wildfires.

We went cross country in our 85 benz a couple years ago. Its great to get these old rigs out on the highway.

Small world. My friend and I drove that same route in Wyoming in 2012 too during the wild fires. You and I might have passed each other. I remember north of Cheyenne, the smoke was so thick, we thought it was fog.

Sounds like it's going to be a trip to remember.
that's the understatement of the decade.
it's really sobering when you realize you are out on a major interstate out in the middle of nowhere and everyone else is driving new stuff. you are the only one driving a truck that is at least 23 years old (last year of the IDI was 1994). only time you'll see one of these is in medium population areas. the crazy part is I feel more confident driving my old **** than I do a new electronic truck.

I feel the same way nb@ the op best of luck on ur trip across the country pictures would be awesome speedy recovery for your mom sir I've seen cancer at different stages in my family n my wife has a form called endometriosis that there is no cure n effects 1 in every 10 ladies from age 8 n older, any who enjoy n love the truck

Nothing crazy about that. IDI's won't always be first to arrive, but they WILL get you there.

I was mainly referring to the family issues though; Seeing buddy get married, catching up with other friends and family (never enough time), Mom having health problems, and going through all of it with what may be the future wife. That's grownup stuff, for sure. (Hint: if she likes the truck, keep her!)

As for the other family member (the IDI), that can be a different experience too, but mine never left me stranded. My F250 isn't the only 30+ year old vehicle I have though. Early last fall, I put nearly 2500km on my E24 covering half the province. Now that the F250 is back together, I'm itching to give it a similar shakedown.

I had the opportunity to drive newer F150s, F250s, and GM equivalents when I worked in the oil patch. Can't say they really did much for me, but I have a hard time respecting anything less than 20 years old. Cars, trucks, music, people, politics, and so on.

Anyway... sorry for the thread hijack. Looking forward to updates from SteelHead!

Hey thanks for all the kind words everyone.

The truck has been running great. Seems to be getting 15.5 miles per gallon.

I made it to SLC at about 4:30 am local time. I started to get tired but didnt want to pay for a hotel so I took i-15 south to rt 6 to a real good camp spot I know of. Its called the diamond forks campground in the Uinta National Forest, in the morning we hiked to and soaked in the Fifth Water hot springs.

Tonight were hoping to make it to Denver.

So far I saw only 1 idi when I stopped at walmart to pick up a drinking water jug.

I had a gasser '84 F-250 that was Calypso Corral. Loved that truck.

Still running smooth. When I crossed the Colorado border though I looked in the rear view mirror and the truck put out a massive black cloud that covered both lanes. Just once that I saw. The didnt hear anything or see anything, what could that have been?

BTW we have dropped south and are cruising i-70 now.
