So I got everything all apart and the old thermostat had a rubber flange seal thing around the metal lip of the thermostat. I ordered a replacement ford thermostat and it did not include said rubber seal. I have looked online and in Napa/Autozone and can't find the right seal/part number. Can I replace it without the rubber flange/seal/thing?

If you would pictures of what I am talking about just let me know and I can post some up.

Thanks

i do not think the thermostats in these use that, it's just the thermostat and gasket i believe

The thermostat does not require a rubber seal around it. Never heard of that for these engines. I always put a little dab of rtv on edges to help it stay in place

Never heard of the rubber ring not being vulcanized to the stat body. I usually cut mine away for better flow. The "idea" is this flex seal will close off the stat so no leak by happens. As the thermostat opens this "seal" stays against the body and restricts flow. Never did learn why they were made that way but.. Best check where your stat was made. We had a few china stats fail and they broke those three legs that holds them as one piece. Not good at all.

proper thermostat can be purchased from o riley auto parts. part number 4399. there is a reason for this particular type for this engine. cant recall the TB for the reason but will try and find it.

I'd like to know this - I'd always heard you couldn't use anything but motorcraft if you expect it to work.

The OEM T'stat comes with that rubber sealing on the body, it's there for a reason, to seal the body so that some of cold coolant goes thru the coolant bypass when the T'stat is closed to provide some coolant circulation, that holds back most of the coolant in the heads so it heats up sooner. If some coolant didn't circulate, the WP would cavitate. The ball bearing check in the T'stat neck is to relieve any air in the coolant system, as soon as liquid touches the ball, it will close the passage.

In the last pic is the bypass hole. when the stat opens it will close off this bypass hole. Believe it or don't...

Mine had a rubber seal all the way around it and the outside ring of it too when I got it, it acted like it was gonna not let the rest of my housing seat correctly so I removed it. My last thermostat was in there without one as well. Hopefully it's not gonna hurt anything but so far it's working
