wanted to show what I did today, if you install the filter head as close to the starter solenoid as possible the hood hinge clears it by about 1/8 inch. I simply used #14 self tapping screws and neoprene washers and it's good and tight. Using the Napa sca additive filter with it. Looking forward to some clean coolant!!

The Napa 4109 kit comes with the filter head and correct 5/8 fittings for the heater hose so it's super easy to install

Also just an update my propane/ isobutane refrigerant mix is awesome. Was 115 out and I had 28 degree vent temp on hi

Only expensive part was the filter. I ran the wix 524088 and they wanted 112$!!. Got it down cheaper but next time I'm ordering it

I forgot which filter # I had on mine but remember I didn't pay more than $10 for one.... really no need to go fancy on a coolant filter imo.

The only thing you forgot about was filter changes. You can't change it there. You'll need to remove the screws and re-insert them but hey, that's not the end of the world.Just over time, the screw holes may become reamed/enlarged to no longer hold after a few changes......but that could be many years until you have any issues even at that.If you could somehow mount a few studs in there, you'd be golden. So when you see most of us use a bracket mounted off the filter head and it mounted out there, this is because the filter can be changed without messing with the mount each time.

Now that I look at it again,it may not be as close as it looked at first,I dunno maybe the filter unscrews and clears right there?

No your right I probably would have to remove, it isn't on by many threads but I figure it would take a few years like you said for an issue and then I can stud it.

Couldn't you just find a filter that's not as tall? So you have enough clearance below it to unscrew it from the head in place?

Here's one, same thread, same OD, MIGHT be same gasket size, aprx. 4" tall, pre-charged - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OKXAD0

Awesome thank you for that! I was looking for a much cheaper option so I will order one and see if it works

I'm going to dissect my filter, ran it for 2 days with brand new coolant and it already plugged! Here's a preliminary pic. Sucks that I paig 85$ for the wix filter and just found out the Donaldson p552071 is a precharged coolant filter for only 14$ at my local caterpillar supply

I was gonna say i paid like $22 for my pre-charged wix filter. The head I bough actually had the part number with it since my kit was a wix kit and it doesn't look nearly as tall as yours either. Maybe it's just perspective. I'll have to measure and grab the part number when I get home

Is it detrimental if the heater circuit gets blocked? Or does the engine/water pump not care?

I was going to do a bypass setup, but this seems like a quick way to get a filter on and filtering a lot of coolant. Plus if the heater gets blocked that may be a bonus this summer.

I've noticed no ill effects. I have all valves and usually shut my heater circuit off completely in summer. So I wouldn't worry, and it's good because it flows a lot of coolant through it!

I'd do a bypass. Those filters and heads are designed as a bypass. Plus, if you get cold weather in the winter months, you'll not like the restricted flow to your heater core. Easy to get some "y" heater hose fitting from any NAPA. Both my IDI's have bypass coolant filter setups. They catch a ton of nasty stuff in the coolant and I stay warm in the cab in the winter. Important for me to have good heat. Running my trap line in the winter before sunrise/work would be misery without good heat in the cab heading out of the freezing dark woods. LOL

I definitely would not use the Napa filter head in any other way but bypass. Once you purchase it you will see the coolant ports are only a little larger than 1/4 inch. Huge restriction if not in bypass
