I know some people say they use less oil if left low. I cant bring myself to let it get that low.

Anyone else agree?

My 1992 IDI used a quart of oil and it would stay there for a long time. If I added the quart back, it would use it quickly. So I agree with chris142.

I run mine 1/2 way between the full and add marks. It's about a quart to bring it to full. If I leave it there it stays there a long time. If I go to full mark it consumes that quart very quickly.

Mine is having an oil consumption issue now and it will go down to fill point and stop, I don't like leaving it like that since it is noticeably more clattery until I add more.

That's where mine was Friday and I topped it off. If you run the PSD oil filter you gain a qt I believe so technically you are only a qt low right???

No. the additional quart is in the system so the level in the pan is still 2 quarts low. The issue with low oil is pickup pump starvation and that is caused by low static levels in the pan. The extra quart in the filter doesn't affect that.

I know but the pickup sets clear in the bottom of the pan. With the amount these things hold I'd think you'd have to be really low to suck air. To me the bigger concern with capacity is heat dissipation. The more fluid you have in the system to spread the heat over the lower the oil temp should stay or more appropriately the lower the average temp should stay. More fluid capacity means more heat capacity to absorb spikes in heat from the engine working. The engine oil really is pulling double duty here especially with the piston squirters.

Check your oil level when cold, then check it when hot, which is what you should do, quite a difference in levels.

The dipstick marking is based on COLD level. You always want to wait until after the engine has NOT run for a while, so as much oil has possible has gone into the pan.
