Hi guys. I have an opportunity to buy a cheap 01 F550 4x4 with a bad engine. Not sure what happened to the engine at this point but the truck is so cheap I don't care. It is a 7.3 and a 6 speed.
I have a number of idi's around and an idi in a F550 would serve my needs very well. I need to go heavier then the 1 tons that I'm running now, but want to stay with a non-electronic engine, if I go thru the effort of an engine swap. I don't have any 12v's around at the moment so that's not an option. And I would like to stay with an idi, since I like them and I like to be different then the Cummins swap crowd.
I would stud and mildly turbo a 6.9 and drop it in if possible. Anyone done this? I realize the 6 speed doesn't bolt up. I have many ZF5's around so I would swap transmission if need be.

Any thoughts would be great.

im thinking about doing a 96 on a 01 chassis.

engine mounts would be the only thing to fab, and maybe a custom radiator.
but its pretty do-able, would be a lot simpler if the psd mounts bolted to an IDI, which they don't.

Personally, I would buy it, then put a little diagnosing into the current engine. Could be something simple.
I would really try to keep the zf6. It can be done. And that'll save you from changing the tcase, driveshafts, etc.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm thinking the engine suffered something catastrophic, nevertheless...yeah I will certainly look into what exactly is going on. But ultimately, I want this truck build to be something as fully mechanical as possible. Just been having too many electrical issues lately and need to get away from that.

I will research mating the ZF6 to the idi and see what I come up with.
