Ok thanks. The adjuster arms were swapped to the wrong sides so I don't think they would have worked that way either

I removed my adjuster arms. They weren't working anyways. The brand new cables had stretched or something.

one side arm works just right and the other has the loose cable you describe. Does it not self adjust randomly without the arm to hold it. how often do you have to adjust them?

Mine, to keep them where I like them, realistically every two weeks. Possibly sooner.
On mine since the arms weren't even contacting, the passenger side would back off. I don't know why but the driver side usually stays fairly good.

The adjusting lever prevents the adjusting screw from turning, if it's not there or touching the adjusting star wheel slots.

The auto adjust takes place when traveling in reverse, a hard braking must take place to turn the adjusting screw wheel.

On a non self adjusting brakes, the star wheel is prevented from turning by a spring across it.

Hmm. I may throw a spring across.
I took the levers off since the adjusting lever cables had stretched.
