I had the same thing happen to my left side back in December. The only thing I could come up with is that the self adjuster lever was not touching the adjuster, so it was able to turn either way. Usually you have to push in on the lever to back off the brakes. I never pay much attention to the self adjusters because I always adjust them myself, but I replaced all of the self adjuster parts with Motorcraft (made in china on the box) parts.
If I recall correctly drum brakes without self adjusters have a spring that layed across the star wheel that would hold it from turning on its own, but its been 30 years since I had one of those apart.

Replaced some parts this weekend. New RABS valve, new copper-nickel lines made and run from RABS to wheel cylinders (new hose in there from frame to axle too) new DRW wheel cylinders, new Motorcraft riveted shoes, and a new passenger side and intermediate brake cable.

I THINK my passenger cable, which was 3 months old, was seizing up/very stiff. I never use the parking brake, but it probably stuck from new and did me in. It still looked new, but I could hardly get it to slide, and if you bent in in a gentle 90 degree (like it has to on the truck), forget about the cable working.

The rest of the stuff is in anticipation of the hydroboost in the near future, and I didn't want to pop a brake line. RABS valve was rough. I hope I get core credit, it's making it's way back to Rockauto now cookoo:dunno

That's about what the one on my truck looked like. Luckily the parts truck had a nice clean one. Hopefully it works.

Eeek, a core? Does that mean when you buy a RABS valve, it's a rebuild from something like THAT ^^^^^^??!? EEEK!

Parking brake is def'ly a "use it or lose it" item. And it goes both ways. Having all manuals, we use the parking brake most of the time. But we make the mistake of applying it on a truck that we park for weeks on end without driving. So lesson learned -- use the parking brake, but if you're gonna park it, apply and release it (or release and re-apply it) now and then.

And I've found the same thing with aftermarket cables. Look fine from the outside, but uselessly stiff. Another lesson learned - only OEM from now on.

I used to live in Wisconsin when I was very young. Lived in White Fish Bay and recently visited there, after 60 years. It is so beautiful to see it very green in late fall. In Calif we had a dought and everything was dead and brown. I loved the Lake and scenery. I do not miss the snow and ice which means salt and cars that fall apart in months.

BTW this truck was in the Madison, WI area from 1994 till I bought it in 2013. Sold at Country Ford in Delavan, WI. I went further north into the rustbelt to buy a truck cookoo

Rock auto used that core as scrap metal. That is a shame to look at too. Nasty salt kills trucks and autos just like it kills humans. But ti sure tastes good on Margaritas and steak...-Drool-Drool:Thumbs Up

My rear shoes are all cracked up bad on both sides on my 94 f350 srw. They haven't been running hot since ive had the truck but I don't think they have been adjusted to do much either. Feeling around for heat is something I do often. I think they are just cheapo shoes. I got the best ones napa has which are riveted and look good but I don't really see any this side out or anything on them. The old ones have the big shoe in back on pass side and small shoe in back on driver side. question is are they lefts and rights or does it not matter as long as the big one is in the rear? Thanks
