Guys,

I have the chance to possibly buy a 94 f350 dually front axle 4x4 for <200. From what I gather, it is a simple hub swap or modify with the possibility of even using the Dana 50 hubs. Either way, what are your thoughts. This is my daily driver and I have a 2 car garage. I do have the option of using my wifes car if/while I do it.

My hesitation is stuff like linkages, shocks, and driveshaft not working for some reason then I am sorta stuck. All I read is "its a direct swap" but I don't completely believe that.

Not sure of the ratio yet. If its not right I could but gears and still be ahead but then again I have never changed any and dont have the knowledge of how to mesh them properly.

There was also a plow on the truck that I would like to have since the price is good. so the solid is tempting.

opinions welcome.
thanks

and this...

"the f250 driveshaft is about 2 inches longer than the f350 d-shaft, and will bind if you install it without shortening it. That can and will crack your transfer case, so don't do it. Only other thing I ran into was brake lines, I had to go buy 93 f350 brake lines from the frame rail to the axle because they were different on the axle end,"

The f 350 driveshaft I believe has a different sized u joint on the t-case side. So you either have to figure out which year is directly interchangeable, change your t-case yolk, or shorten your 250 driveshaft.

You need the F350 driveshaft.
And I believe you can just swap the yoke from a 350 also.
Length doesn't need messed with.

GOing tomorrow to look at it. Think I have enought things to look for to make sure it is a D60. Look for stamping, measure width, can check spline count on hubs to see if 30 vs 35, tags, etc.

I came across this in doing research and got confused, the guy says it is a dually 4x4 and he cut it in half to use the bed for a project (guessing trailer)....

"it can be kind of tough, because you need 4wd dually front hubs.this means you wont find them under a truck with a pickup bed because all those were 2wd.pre-99 all ford offered was 2wd dually pickup.
to find your 4wd/D60 DRW front hubs (that will also bolt on your D50 like stated) you'll need to score them from a f350 cab n chassis 4wd.so skip right over the trucks with pickup beds to save some time.rare you'll find a 4wd convert, but i suppose a quick glance under 'em wouldn't hurt to be safe you don't miss one."

********.
if you're buying an entire F350, you have all the pieces to BOLT and GO.
you will need the:
pitman arm.
alxe assy.
spring assys (f350 springs, u-bolts and brackets)
panhard rod assy (rod and bracket)
transfer case yoke and F350 double cardan driveshaft(two ujoints on the transfer case side)
rear lifting blocks and U-bolts.
for those interested, I have said "kit" for sale in the marketplace for $1800. all necessary parts and hardware included.
NOT PARTING OUT KIT.
all you need to do with your STOCK f250 4x4 is jack up truck, remove and hang the front calipers and swap out the rest.
easy.
or go buy a f350 4x4 of 86 to 97 vintage and have all the parts ready to go.

Well I have it. Now have to decide if I want to deal with gear swap too or not. Think I forgot two things I needed. The pitman arm off steering box and the yoke in the t case. I got the driveshaft with Carden joint. Woo.

Its a 610445-6 dana

Looking at gears, they seem cheap enough. and it looks like 4.10 down is good ok to swap for thickness http://www.crawlpedia.com/thick_gears.htm.

I am seeing a range of about 500-1000 to have someone change them. plus i would have to refresh everything else. obviously

If I don't end up using it, is it ok to ask what its worth on this site? I didn't see any rules when I looked. It does have the dually adapters which I learned are a decent price if you can wait on them for someone to buy.

Ask away. It is not inexpensive to go through a D60. If you are doing a gear swap, probably want new bearings and seals etc. I probably had close to $800-1K in mine end-to-end in parts and I didn't swap gears.

That looks to be a ball joint 60 from what I can see in the pic. Those are less desirable than the king pin version but desirable nonetheless. Dually hubs or aftermarket adapters? The dually hubs are more desirable than the adapters as well it seems. You don't have to swap pitman arms but is limits turning radius from my understanding.

Not sure about the drive shaft swap. I have seen it both ways on here and other places. I'm not sure who to believe.
