So I was thinking why can't we simply install dually drums and brakes on a single rear wheel differential. Is there something I might be missing. Maybe backing plate???
SRW brakes 2.5"
DRW brakes 3"
DRW drum is offset deeper backing plate takes up most of the difference. additional spindle length unknown at this time.
hope this helps.
Yes this helps. I was felling like the backing plate needed to be offset. Might go "shopping" tomorrow at the pic n pull yard. Just to have a look see and compare them side by side if possible.
I will be attempting this soon. I am going to try putting everything backing plates out from a drw onto a srw axle. The drw has everything new in it, srw is missing everything including the backing plates. The guy started converting over to disks
i wonder if there will be enough room between where the backing plate would need to be mounted for the drw drums to fit,and the springs......im guessing not but there might be! haha.this would be cool.
Extra friction material can't be bad right? It would have to be backing plate and all and I'm still not sure where the wheel would end up or the more appropriately where the drum will end up relative to the backing plate. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there must be about 2.5" more drum than just the brake shoe width. The dually spacers are about 2.5-3" thick if I remember correctly. So either the backing plate has to swallow that or the spindle and hub has to make up for it. Do the hubs interchange? That would be the first clue I would think.
IIRC the hubs ate the same with longer studs? Been a long time since I've dug into that info and most of my links are gone. I have no idea about spindle length but would like to.
Just to add some more confusion to this mix, Rockauto lists 2.5", and 3" for my 93 F250 (I'm assuming that is Semi-float vs Full-float); If you look into the 93 F350 it lists 3" and 3.5" for both DRW and SRW applications.
So certain single wheel trucks may have bigger shoes than certain duallies?
