Here's an odd and possibly stupid question, what's the availability of good PSD radiators? It doesn't have to be for a 7.3 either (altho looking at the '99-'02 ones they look awful close to what IDIs run), maybe even the later ones have something we can adapt without too much work? Them engines are much newer than IDIs, and they make lots more power and thus heat, so if we can use some of their stuff that should be a decent upgrade, right?

the 99-02 radiators dont have a fill, and have a larger(5/8") hose running to the recovery tank where you fill the rad.
not too big of a deal, but a PSD recovery tank will be needed.

Maybe they will, but probably they won't unless it fails within a couple months. I used to primarily use Advance and pay the premium for the "better" parts with limited lifetime warranty. You may as well cross out the lifetime and bold the limited. 9 out of 10 times they will tell you the part is worn out, not defective. If you walk in with a leaky radiator in two years they'll say it's worn out and refuse to replace. Pay for quality, not for warranties.

Either the industry has changed since I've worked in it, or Advance has a way stricter/screwier warranty policy. I worked at Kragen (now O'Reilly) throughout high school and college, and even had a brief stint at AutoZone. In my several years, I was never told to not honor a warranty because something looked 'worn out', with the exception of wearable items like brake pads. As long as the part didn't seem altered or otherwise molested and didn't test 'good' (e.g. alternator failed bench test), we swapped for a new one no questions asked. We kept our history on the customer, too, so having a receipt wasn't necessary. Granted, our stores weren't networked (at the time; hopefully that's changed) so sometimes it took a bit of calling around to find the info, but it was there.

The only time that got screwy was about halfway through my stint at Kragen when they 'changed' the policy on brake pads/shoes to not cover wear. Now, depending on which manager / corporate-type you asked, it wasn't technically a 'change' in policy as much as it was a clarification, but it made for some fun customer 'interactions' when folks who had been getting essentially free brake pads for YEARS were cut off. Honestly, though, expecting free replacements on wear parts because of a warranty is kinda BS and the customers knew it.

I realize the PSD recovery tank is pressurized, but could you get away with running a universal radiator overfill cap, I believe Moroso used to make them. If you could utilize one of these in the highest reasonable spot of your upper radiator hose, you could just use your standard IDI overflow tank. Any reason this won't work :dunno

Brian, as the most crossed functioning bricknose/OBS IDI/OBS PSD/99+ PSD "virtual boneyard", I nominate you to make the measurements/fitment for the benefit of the IDI community. :D

you know, i really should.
as i haver my 01 PSD that has a blown headgasket, and is currently sitting and corroding.
if i get to it, i will.
i would even run one. but it may interfere in my IC, and i already coated my charge pipes.

edit: this will not work.
the radiator does not have the conventional brackets as the IDI radiator, when they switched, the PSD radiator has "pins" in both tanks that locate the radiator.
too much work for not enough gain.

The information I have seen about the lifetime warranties at Advance Auto is the way their lifetime warranty work is they will replace the part ONCE in a "lifetime". If the same part fails a second time (after a short "new warranty" period of like 30 or 60 days) you buy a new one. Then that new one (the 3rd part in this scenario) has a lifetime warranty for a 1 time replacement... and the cycle continues.

With AutoZone's lifetime (I believe NAPA also) has the "old fashioned" lifetime warranty. One you replace it, as long as you own the vehicle it was installed on, they will replace it. BTDT on several different items..... This is one main reason I've steered away from using Advance... I normally use Autozone or NAPA as my first choices. Another advantage I have with both is there is an Autozone hub about 15 miles from the house, and they normally stock "one of everything" and the NAPA Distribution Center is about 20 miles from the house, and they have an attached NAPA Store, and this stores "stock room" IS the warehouse, so if they don't have it, no NAPA has it........

However, YMMV depending on your local store....

I used to use advance but now I use autozone
they will return anything no questions asked.

I bring this up in every Raditator thread I come across.
The genesis All Aluminum Raditator I've had mine on since 2013
no leaks still like new think I paid $250 but I also got a coupon(20% I think)

Yup, we would regularly return "worn" lifetime warrentied items for folks. That's on of AZ's big selling points. Their beale pads cost just s much as part store xyz, but part store xyz will only replace defective products for life, AZ will replace it everytime time the pass wears to the backing, seals fail due to age on pumps, alternators burn up (they have to test them now to be sure), etc.

Advance is where I've got the shaf ton "lifetime" warranties. Two alternators and a starter, specifically. One alternator would have been the third replacement, other alternator and starter were first replacement which they denied saying they were worn out not defective. Whatever, Not worth my time to make much of an argument out of it... I'd rather just spend my money elsewhere. I will never buy for a warranty though, as several other companies have screwed me over on warranties entirely or haven't made me whole.

Absolutely best company for warranty though, Remflex (exhaust gaskets). Look 'em up, great quality and great company to deal with. They are my go to for exhaust gaskets and worth the premium price. Also O'Neill has stood behind their board shorts when I split 'em in less than one season (maybe a joke in there...) and I am very pleased with the quality of their wetsuits. Also had a satisfactory warranty replacement with DBElectrical of a 3g alternator, and pleased with 3 years and counting of service from a marine 10si alternator and starter I got with them.

Notable companies that have recently screwed me on warranties include Advance Auto Parts as will Tenneco (Monroe/Rancho).

The highlighted is exactly what a call to Advance Auto Parts Customer Service told me..."as long as you're the original owner, the part has a lifetime warranty" Of course if a Deer antler goes through it well, that's another story.

Thanks for checking, another good idea that just doesn't work out :fan:
