Any one else using an aftermarket solid state controller with good results? I bought a replacement BWD controller for my 89 and its having issues.
This controller keeps the relay engaged longer than the wts light is on. The truck is easier to start if I watch the battery gauge and not the wts light.
If I go by the wts light, the truck is hard to start on a cold day but if I wait for the battery gauge to come back up, which is several seconds after the wts light goes out, the truck starts just fine.
Just wanted some thoughts on this. Thanks.

Played that game once. Ended up with a motor craft unit from Ford to make it right. I may still have a take off if you want to try it.

How many seconds is the wts light illuminated for and how many seconds after that does the voltage gauge pop back up?

When I timed it the other morning, it was in the 35 degree range. WTS light was on for 12 seconds but the relay satyed engaged for 20.
My wife went out to move the truck and the 12 seconds was not enough to start the truck without prolonged cranking. If you ignore the light and wait for the relay to click, the truck fires right up.
Isnt there a way to wire the WTS light to one side of the relay? I guess the WTS light works by ground, so I guess I would have to wire in a relay to make it work.

That's interesting. I replaced my original controller with a NOS International one and noticed an immediate difference. Yesterday I started the truck after it sat for ~10 hours and made a particular note to look at the factory gauge. WTS light stayed on for 12 seconds and no change on the gauge. Cranked and it started right up but I also have the electric fuel pump which made a tremendous difference in starting. Tomorrow I'll leave the key in run after the light extinguishes and let it go for about 30 seconds to see if I get any gauge movement after the light goes out.

I have seen lots of controllers do this, I have my light wired so that it is on when there is voltage to the plugs.

I changed my starting technique this morning just to see if the voltage gauge moves after the WTS light extinguishes. Normally I start the truck immediately after it goes out, but on both a cold and warm start, about 6 seconds after the light extinguishes, the factory gauge moves up noticeably. I didn't notice any difference in the actual start and this is an International controller.

My bwd stays on longer to I go by the amp meter. Was wondering since my f usable links burned up on my harness if I put a push bottom in it will that help get away from some of the harness nightmares?

Do like Black dawg said.
If it was done on a psd truck and a idi owner drove it and saw it, they'd chit bricks.
They stay on for two minutes. Lol
