US Gear Overdrive - Brand New - What to Do

Hauled home "brand new"... yes "NEW" - "NOS" - US gear OD unit. Never installed. The install kit is for a 2WD C6 p/n 80-80026 and the OD unit itself is p/n 170-48080. The OD unit shows it works with 4WD and 2WD models up to 2003. Not sure what the kits require or if it's a direct T/C mount. Nice looking outfit, I am not sure if I can keep it. I already did a differential gear swap so my RPM's are manageable now. If you have any questions or interest shoot me a PM. If I were to let it go I would rather it be to an Oil Burner than the open market. I just don't know if I would gain that much in economy or engine life - most of my cruising is at 65 at or near empty.

The guy had it listed locally, I live in a real small rural area. I can't find the ad anymore but he had it listed wrong, I think he listed it as Gear Vendor, he really didn't know much about it. His buddy had bought it(computer illiterate) some years back and was going to put it in his gasser F250. Time caught up to him as he is now in his 70's and just figured.... get it gone. It was in direct the first trip to his place and I didn't know how to shift it, got some pointers here from John on shifting it. I made the guy a crazy low offer the first time as it could have been an Underdrive and he said no. Went back today, put a battery on it, shifted right in and Overdrive she is. Hard to imagine finding one still brand new.

A couple other things I would add in searching for NOS or older parts is to search all around the item you are looking for - thinking of any possible term or word for the item. For example OD, Overdrive, overdriven, GV, Gear Vendor, US Gear, Nash, Doug Nash, DNE. Also many of the guys that have NOS or good stuff for these trucks are older and not terribly computer literate (not mentioning any names here..lol) - example not only was this US Gear listed as Gear Vendor but his description didn't really say it was new, it was very vague. You never know unless you check. Basic stuff here, but I hope it helps someone.

This is true and good advice.

Even my father who was in his 40's had a terrible time trying to type well and use computers in the best way. He graduated college and was not dumb by any means. I am obviously not old being born in 1990 but even me being almost 24 I still could work circles around him on a computer any day of the week and twice on sunday.

Unfortunately nowadays it is hard to do much of anything well without being able to use technology, but I have noticed this a lot when searching for things with these older trucks as it seems like the people that own them are of an earlier generation or generations.

i know absolutely nothing about these things so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but can you swap out the adapter like on a gearvenders and run it behind a zf-5? or does it have to be a c6?

I can assure you with some certainty that it goes aft of the transfer case on a 4WD and not in place of it. I don't think the idea is to neuter your 4x4 to have an OD.

I think you have a two wheel drive unit...you have what looks like a slip yoke fitting in the back for a driveshaft, and the front bolts on to the adapter in the second pic that IIRC is meant to replace the rear housing on the C6. I have a 4x4 unit, and I can assure you that it's designed to go between the transmission and the transfer case. Here are a couple of pictures of mine, including of the rear side that the transfer case bolts on to. The GearVendors units go behind the transfer case and can only be used in 2WD.

I have to admit that I'm drooling over it, but I know there are people who need it more badly than I do...

Tim - You are correct. See attached application guide. I missed the 170 prefix (2wd) and the 140 prefix (4wd) on the part numbers - the circled part numbers are for my unit - 1st page is for 2wd applications 2nd page is 4wd. I added a couple more photos so you can clearly see the design of the 2wd unit. Also the newer style case which has the limit switches for AT shifter indicator lights and the shifting motor power feed in rear of motor cover.

Sorry about adding to the confusion on this unit, not seeing one installed in a 4wd led me to believe it was an after T/C install - This is clearly a 2WD ONLY unit
