gotcha, that makes sense, thanks for the input. im just looking for an upgrade over my banks turbo. this hy35 would be free.

ive found 40s for like 300 bucks. if its that much better ill take that risk. lol

Which banks turbo do you have? If you look at compressor maps, the hy and the hx35 (depending on how you use your truck) are a little on the small side. I would say a very good upgrade over NO turbo, But there are better sized turbos out there to upgrade your banks kit.

See Sig, I love my HY35. Studs and springs are ordered, also ordering air/water intercooler this week. Will be dynoing in September. I'm already out of fuel though even at 10psi.

Edit, if I can figure out how to run a 4" downpipe I'd like to run an HE351, slightly bigger compressor than the HY35

I mispoke when I said the Hy35 wouldn't work. At lower boost levels like you are running I'm sure it is actually a pretty good turbo that spools extremely fast. It is just when it hits a certain amount of air flow that it will start to heat the egts up with a smaller turbine side like that. I'm not sure what boost that would happen at though. If someone kept boost at 10psi like you have, I wouldn't hesitate to run that turbo. At what rpm do you hit max boost at?

Also an He351 would be a good single. It has decently sized compressor and a big enough hot side.

I don't have a tach yet, hopefully picking one up tonight actually. It hits 10 fast though. Trying to decide how high I want to go after the studs are in. Guess ill see where it chokes when I get the valve springs and gov spring in.

Edit: if it chokes off bad with more fuel even with my external wastegate I may consider compounding it, leaving the HY35 in the factory position like it is now.

What are your egts at now? Also upon more thought, an Hy35 might work as a secondary in compounds if you keep it at 10psi like you said and then use a pretty big external wastegate that bypasses the exhaust energy to right before the primaries turbine. That could work. What size of primary would you go with if that was the case? I would recommend something with a big turbine housing so that it can flow after the Hy35.

I can hit 1200 if I try hard enough empty on flat ground, like 0-85mph. Towing is all egt limited, 16k gross on a 6% grade I can do 55-60 holding it at 1200

I been following this. wanting to upgrade mien with the least amount of work. first thought was a hx35, but now reconsidering. I want to do turbo and my 6.0 intercooler at the same time...

thanks for all the replies and input first of all.

i have the wastegated banks turbo. at this time unloaded i can only get about 800* and 10 lbs out of the truck, with a muffler and 3" exhaust.

thats what my plan is also. i have a core im rebuilding, when i swap the motors i would like to change the turbo and add the intercooler, but use the existing up pipes and change the flange only. i dont want to do a lot more fabrication (IE making my own manifolds and relocating turbo) im still considering whether to modify the intake or make a hat.

now the hy35 right now in my dads 5.9 makes 30lbs of boost, little high on the egts when loaded heavy and going up a steep grade. but the thing has some POWER, like spin 35s in a auto power. i understand our motors are a lot bigger but weve gone hours at 20lbs down the freeway 70+ loaded 15k+

boost i would like to be able to make is 25 TOPS. would like to run 18-20 unloaded max, 10ish freeway cruising. not looking to make gobs of boost, just good towing power. i think im going to try it, if EGTS peg ill just get the bigger exhaust housing and go from there.
