Is this worth $200?

I have a friend that wants to sell this Banks air box for a 6.9/7.3 idi...I guess the turbo took a dump. He wants $200 for this, the EGT guage and the oil feed line...Is it worth it?

that is nothing more than a "chastity belt" for your motor. once you get it installed, you won't want to go through the grief of taking it off to work on anything under the airbox.

get the whole turbo kit for it and get it rebuilt.

So is that a "YES" or "NO not really"? If I can get the turbo,what would it cost to get it rebuilt?...Sorry if I am sounding stupid, but I have never dealt with a turbo nothing.

its a pita to service but ITS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION,,, I second getting the entire kit an rebuilding it.
well verison cut out the rest of this,,,,,,
only the square pressure chamber is outta production,,, my call to banks tech was very helpful, the guy went into the archives and sent me the orig. pdf file that came with the kit(including a cut sheet for making your own exhaust system) mine works well. the tech line WILL take a while to get into but is worth the wait.

Well, I think I am going to try to get the turbo too. Should I tell him $200 for everything WITH the turbo? Since this is "out of production" can the parts till be gotten for the turbo? From my research it is an early Banks kit.

Well you have several useful posts. It is a problem to remove this from the engine to do any work thats under it as posted. Can you live without this air filter.. Short answer is yes but something has to be in place on the air intake. Being out of production is a good reason to grab it too. But on the other side of that I have never seen a post where a person was wanting one. Now for the possible turbo buy.. Its going to be a non wastegated turbo but they are rebuildable too. Depending on what happened to kill the turbo will tell what the repair cost is. If a wheel rubbed the housing then it will be a wheel and seal kit repair plus some housing machining to fit the new wheel. If the hot side wheel rubbed it may be more expensive that the cold side wheel rub. Knowing the answer to these possible reasons for a rebuild will help tell you what the final cost is. Now add balancing to this adds a little more.. Never try to run any turbo without balancing it. They spin upwards of 120,000 rpm. Thats 2,000 rpm per second. A gram out of balance and the new turbo is ruined in a short run.

Yep, Im with everyone else, $200 for the whole turbo setup would probably be fair with a bad turbo, no way on the airbox and pyro

its a 2nd gen. 1st gen the intake plenum and the air filter box is separate. 2nd gen is a one piece casting.

I had a 1st gen banks kit that said TURBO 6.9 or something on it, I gave it away with a motor I sold.

Banks doesnt like supporting the older kits well according to lots of members here, seemed like too much of a hassle to even deal with. As far as banks if your in doubt and its not a sidewinder I wouldnt bother.

Honestly its not what anyone wants to hear but the most cost effective way to turbo this damn motor is by calling hypermax and dropping 2k on a pulse kit. game over. You can spend all the time your NOT running around on forums and at junkyards looking for parts AT WORK making money to pay off the turbo.

Last I heard Banks was still selling the wastegated turbo kits for our idi engine. If they stopped doing that I would have figured someone here would have posted about it... Maybe I missed something.. Maybe not. Russ will know if any rebuild kits are available for this turbo.

depends on what kind of powerband you are looking for.
ATS 093 (oem or aftermarket) if tuned correctly, will come on sooner than a hypermax but supposedly chokes off at higher RPMs.
hypermax breathes better at high RPMs but takes longer to come on at lower RPMs
depends on what you want to do and as you have learned, the terrain you operate in.
I tend to gravitate to the ATS 093 due to the hilly terrain I live in.
your results may vary.

I know the hypermax isnt nessesarily the best turbo kit all around, just at least for me, spending 2 grand and being DONE and having a turbo that will last me a while (new, complete) seems appealing. I have read numerous posts on here about banks and ats not supporting there older turbos

I called banks while the turbo was in my possession pretending I needed some parts and pretty much got told to F off. I didn't bother calling back. I do that a lot to check of a company's worth dealing with, btw GEARVENDORS passed that test with flying colors!

Sorry not meaning to start a debate, just sometimes when I think about all the work I have done with different setups trying to save a few bones (im always attempting to save money, and now that POS dodge chillin' in my driveway, I think "Should have just bought the hypermax!" I guess if you had a VERIFIED COMPLETE AND IN GREAT CONDITION ats or old banks kit it would be a good deal, just from my personal experience (which mind you has only been messing with these trucks for 2 years so im still a novice compare to lots of you guys it never works out the way I planned, cheapest route is brand new from hypermax! Anyhow all debating aside, 200 bones is way to much for the hat!
