So the thread about breaking down in st Claire Missouri was posted by my brother. He doesn't have an account yet so I let him use mine. Anyways borrowed my buddies 2002 chevy 2500 duramax and got it home. It had been dripping something where it was parked and keep dripping after getting it home. So yesterday finally got around to pulling all glow plugs and what do you know the second cylinder back on the drivers side blew out coolant. Go to drain the oil and atleast a good 2 gallons of coolant come out before the oil does. He said it felt low on power since he had left tulsa Oklahoma heading towards Indiana. He had pulled off at a rest stop and said he noticed a slight ticking when he restarded it. Then once pulling back on I44 he happened to look back and see lots of white smoke. So he pulled over, shut it off and crawled under the truck to see if anything was leaking and said it sounded like something (liquid) was running into the exhaust. Then it wouldn't crank back over at all. Which of course because it was hydrolocked. So now i have to rebuild it with all new gaskets and seals, probably type4 cam, etc... etc... etc.... Going to start pulling it tomorrow. Any guesses as to if it's just the headgasket or if it may be cavitation?

My guess would be a head gasket. I'd expect cavitation to present it's self a slow leak rather than just suddenly showing up like that. No way to know until you pull it though.

Well this is definitely not a good engine situation for many reasons. You are sure to have a bent connecting rod and maybe damaged valves as well. An engine that is ran with coolant in the oil is a problem because coolant is very ******* engine bearings. Expect to look into overhauling the entire engine upon further inspection.

This is the tool plus a dial indicater to check if a rod is bent. Clean off the block deck and set this up. Then place it over the cylinder and bring up the pistons. Write down what you find. It takes plenty on motion to bend one of these rods. I think you wil be ok there. The reason coolant got into number 4 cylinder is open to many differant possibilitys as posted above. Please take pictures as you remove parts. It helps when you question what has been done.

All good ideas guys. O got the Turbo off yesterday. I was surprised at how easy it came off. Lol. I'll see if I can find that tool when I go to harbor freight to pick up a cherry picker.

Hopefully . this was your unexpected find, but many times coolant can cross from the heads to the intake manifold runners and fake you out BIG TIME . A leak there can even cause a false positive for a HG leak or cavitiation on a combustion gas leak test if you dont block off the CDR inlet to the intake manifold.

I wish it were that easy.

I'll get better pics tomorrow with a real camera. All I had for now was my phone. If you guys could look at these two pics and tell me if you see the problem. These are both cylinder four.

Now I also want to know what is up with these two injectors. Pulled from cylinder six and eight.
