mmmm, NO!! the years of the 6.2, were plagued with problems form the start,,bad head bolts, cracking pistons, cracking heads..and trans dumping.. friend bought one new,,and had MANY problems with it,,thought he had a lemon,,and traded it.. NOPE,, they were a piece of junk. bought anther new,,and just about the same story. when he tried the bbb,,they told him,,most of their support money at that time,,came from,,guess who.. he got rid of the second piece of junk,,and went dodge diesel..and if you owend one of the 6.5's,,that was another hummer..hardcore chevy friend of mine,,that runs a diesel repair,,and pump injection shop,,said ALLLL 6'5's,,are notorious,,for busting out at the main webs,,at around 135,000 or so miles.. and he said the gm shortblocks,,werent one bit better.....gm,, NEVER learned any lessons.. even with the izusu,,when it first came out,,was plagued with problems,,for close to two years running,,and the allisons werent much better......

my 98 gmc mini bus has 243000 miles on it. stock engine. never had headgaskets or even injectors. has had 3 injection pumps. but she fires right up and doesnt leak a drop of oil.[/QUOTE]

I think is probably still be.driving a Ford. Either a 1990 fox mustang with a 302 ci bored .30 over or my old 1995 f150 with a 351 4x4 with riderite airbags in the back

IDI diesels are something i just kind of meandered my way into. It started with my purchase of the $100 dollar 84 diesel ranger. Drove that thing (slowly) all over the place and loved it. At the same time i was doing a lot of work on my other trucks i had (all chevys) and it seemed like they were getting worked on more often than they were on the road. So when i finally said to hell with this chevy of mine i went looking for a truck. A friend of mine's dad had owned this truck and she was driving it to school but she didn't like it very much. So i asked her if her dad wanted to sell it. She's said he probably would because she had stopped driving it. Went and looked at it (first time ever looking at one of these engines) and thought that it pretty much looked like all the diesels i had worked on in farm equipment and ended up buying it. Aside from slowly growing to loving the engine i also found that truck to pretty much never let me down whereas all my chevys did nothing but let me down. And the rest as they say is history.

As far as what would i be driving if i didn't have this? I honestly dont know.

I'd either be driving a late 70s f250 with a 400 or 460 in it. Or I wouldnt mind having a late 70s dodge macho power wagon with an 440. Also a late 70s through mid late 80s chevy with a 350 carb or throttle body. Dont matter to me. But I love my IDI. Its first on my list. A master rebuild kit for a 6.9 is cheaper than doing just injectors on a new powerstroke.

I grew up on a farm with all IH tractors. I knew how they built engines. I drove one of the 1st F-250s in eastern NC at Lee Motor Co. in Wilson NC. I was hooked, the power and torque was great. Unfortunately I coundn't afford one. I drove a scout Terra with a Nissian Diesel for many years. Got a chance to buy a 1 owner 83 F-250 4wd 4sp from the original owner in 2007. Loved the truck but no AC. Bought the 1992 in 2011. I have 2 Rangers to bum arround in and a 1993 IH 4900 DT-466 flatbed dump along with 14 IH tractors (all diesel but 1). There is a pattern here. I used to run all IH light duty trucks then switched to Ford. I have owned a GMC and a Chevy but they nickled and dimed me to death. My Fords held up great. Eason

Honestly I was ALWAYS a chevy guy, Had some fun with jeep comanches too, but when I moved to the desert, I wanted a 3/4ton, longbed, manual transmission, 4x4, DIESEL! That was it, no exceptions! I drove a few 6.2s that couldnt get out of there own way, guys wanted more then i wanted to speend for a 6.5 with a bad motor, and I was looking at about a 200 mile radius around me!
On the far side of Tucson someone was selling this 1992 4x4 zf5 extended cab longbed ford diesel. I showed up and drove it, it ran excellent, 4x4 worked, basically I loved it.I went home and thought about the fact that I can no longer call myself a chevy guy, went back to buy it and noticed it had 300k miles!!!

I took another day to think about it, and even FOUND THIS FORUM to ask "is 300k too many miles? should i buy this thing? bla bla bla"

Got mixed answers, so naturally since the money was burning a hole in my pocket I bought it.

I have put about $1000 into it in the year or so I have owned it, and it is now my daily driver. Nuff said.

I drive my IDI because its simple, reliable and easy to work in and cheep to drive on WMO! If I had to drive a different truck it would be a OBS ford with the fuel injected 300 6 with a 5 speed I had a 93 f150 with that setup that was a great truck did everything I asked it to but I needed a bigger truck to haul more that's when I got my first IDI a 1988 f250 ex cab 4x4 zf5.

If you think about it, it's the latest model truck you can buy with no emissions. Everything on the engine is there for some purpose besides emissions. No smog pumps, no catalytic converters, no charcoal canisters, minimal vacuum lines, and you can do anything you want with the exhaust. It's not why I bought it, but it's what is making me keep it. It's a relief to be able to go to the inspection station, and just have to worry about rusting floorboards, and not have to worry about all that emissions stuff being present and working.

I bought my truck because I needed a truck. I was in Los Angeles after Hurricane Katrina, and I bought a retired U-Haul box van to haul stuff back to New Orleans.

I'd never owned a diesel before but I've always trusted Fords, so I handed the man $4000 and picked my truck out of about 20 for sale. I loaded it real full and towed an Acura RSX back to New Orleans without a hitch. We fell in love on that trip.

I got bored one day and chopped most of the box off, so now I have an extremely ugly flatbed. I LIKE IT UGLY. People are scared of it.

My truck's never let me down, except when I've done something stupid (like leave it sitting for two years). I feed it WMO and WATF when I service my other cars. We get along great.

This week, with Hurricane Isaac bearing down on New Orleans, my truck stayed 10ft from my front door. If we had to run from flood water, we were doing it in a truck that can ford 30 inches. As it turned out, she stayed right out front and kept our phones & flashlights & laptops charged during the 5day power outage. Then we moved several loads of downed tree limbs off the street with my IDI flatbed ugly-mobile.

I got my first as a payoff for some cement work from a friend that had already put 270,000 miles on it. Amounted to about a $600 purchase. Drove it for 3 years and freshened it up with new belts, hoses and a trans rebuild just to get T boned by an old lady pulling out of the post office. Well, my truck was totalled because it would have taken more than it was worth to restore it. So I took the insurance cash ($5800), Kept the truck or about $1000, spent about $350 on a few parts and installation and had a driving truck again. the old lady? Her car drove under my front wheels and was a complete loss right away. I was even able to drive the truck after the wreck, just some bent suspension parts and a little more bent sheet metal.

Partly because of the reliability, partly because I didn't feel like working on my 69 Chebby C20 to fix all of the burned out lights in the dash (among other crap), I started looking for another Ford. Lo and behold, I found a gem for $400, but it had a bad rod (according to the ad). Actually it had a blown head gasket at 100,000 miles. So I rebuilt the engine (my first diesel, what a titanic pig of an engine! Everything weighs 100 pounds or more!) and have been happily driving it ever since. Except for the 6 weeks that it went missing from behind a locked gate at my shop. But I got it back, minus batteries and with very little damage, and drive it with glee.

If I couldn't drive my IDI for a truck... hmmm. Probably just keep buying sub $500 beaters and seeing how long they could last or how much money I could make after fixing them a little. I've been doing that for years, until a few years ago when my wife asked me to quit and buy something nice. She likens it to the clothes you wear reflecting on who you are... guess I had never thought about a car being that big of a deal as far as image, plus I don't really give a damn that much. For some weird reason it makes her feel better that I drive something that looks nice. So I went from making money on transportation to wasting money on transportation.

Well i already have my only other truck id drive other than an IDI (my 93...althought a 96/7 ECSB F250 PSD would be a close second choice). Why do i drive it? Well i dont drive it much i use my 06 F150 but why do i keep it? Its simple to work on, readily available parts, fairly cheap parts, for the most part its trouble free and if the world ever ends or the zombie apocolypse happens i know i can get out of town and run down walkers (yes, i love the walking dead lol)

But really, its a one ton truck thats almost bullet proof drivetrain wise. Its solid, rugged and dependable. And if i need it, i can use it for my bug out truck, and burn almost anything that will ignite for fuel. Its really one of the perfect doomsday vehicles out there. I can haul all my supplies ill need, go through or over almost any obsticale in my way, find what i need at a parts store and fuel for it is everywhere (if society ends, i have an endless supply of fuel...just drain all the abondanded vehicles oil and trans fluids, filter and go).
