Hey all. Been a while since I've been online. Super busy with work and life.

My 94 has decided to give me a head ache. Just recently I have what sounds like either a

A. Lifter knock
B. exhaust leak
C. Failing IP

Symptoms include: down on power and boost. High egts. And this annoying knock when under just even a little load. I occasionally have a slight miss at idle, nothing serious just a hiccup every once in a while.

The IP is right at 1 year old with about 40k miles of heavy WMO blends. The electric pump keeps it at 9 psi all the time. The truck sounds a little different. I'm wondering if my timing has retarded some. Would retarded timing give this knock sound? I don't have the common hot start issue

Last weekend I did a little work on the pickup and tightened up the 4 bolts for the y pipe. They are snug. I don't think I have an exhaust leak unless it's at the manifold itself. I will check those this weekend.

I had the lifters replaced last year when we did the top end of this engine. I suppose one could have gone bad again?

At first I was worried about a head gasket. No coolant in oil or vice versa. Doesn't a seeping gasket have more of a deep thumping sound including at idle?

Ideas all?

Thanks!

First I've ever heard of roller lifter going bad in these engines, unless the hydraulic top end of them went bad. Unless your WMO is centrifuged it won't take long to wear out an IP and injectors.

Thx Oldbull. Yep one went bad. I should have taken pics last year.

Yes my blend is centrifuges. New injectors the same time as pump as well.

Sounds more like an injector issue to me but this is my opinion. I would pull the glowplugs out and have them tell you what is going on in each cylinder. This is a great way to identify problems. If you have a glowplug that is getting stuck in head, melted tip, or excessive traces of carbon, this could be a sign that you have an injector issue....as long as it's not an autolite glowplug. I bet you have an injector that is hanging open a little, which would cause excess smoke and a hiccup as you described. If it happens to be an injector issue and you pull it out, make sure the precup isn't clogged with rock hard carbon......this is a little more likely to happen for people who burn alternative fuels. Hope this helps

Fuel is about the only thing I can think of that causes a problem that comes and goes. Injectors are the cheapest. Check them first.

Well shoot. I'm a little worried there might be more to this than I thought.

I've checked exhaust and it's all tight. I've noticed more recently that it seemed like my blowby tube was pushing a bunch more smoke than normal. I'm not burning oil, in fact ever since I ditched the cdr I'm not using any oil at all.
Did an oil change and for giggles afterwards with engine running I pulled the dipstick to see how fast the oil started going black again. With dipstick removed, a good little billow of smoke was coming out of the tube. Pulled the oil fill cap, same thing, high pitch whistle and quite a bit of smoke. I've never noticed it doing this before.
Immediately head gaskets come to mind? Thing is, no oil in my coolant, the radiator hoses aren't rock solid like they are getting compressed, I'm not burning oil.

Ideas?? Heads were completely redone almost a year ago to date as well as new gaskets. I'm not gonna be a happy camper if this is the issue but sure want to know soon before huntin season starts.

I called a buddy who's pretty savvy and he felt certain it was a head gasket or a head problem. Help please.

I plan to get a set of BB's from Russ and replace the DPS injectors. I sure would like to know if I have a bigger problem though.

I may need to go buy me a diesel compression test kit.

Could a ******* injector(s) significantly increase blowby to the point I described above?

Outside of a compression test how else can I rule out Head Gaskets?

- No noticeable coolant in oil (no foaming of oil, sludge, etc..)
- No oil in coolant (that I can find anyway)
- Radiator hoses aren't excessively hard, you can squish them in with your hand with engine running
- Exhaust doesn't smell sweet like burning coolant
- w/ cold engine, and radiator cap off, starting the engine, I don't get bubbles. Coolant does seem to pressurize kind of fast though, within about 1-2 mins of cap off, radiator will start flowing coolant out.

Thanks in advance for your help all. I'm stressed big time. We are moving in a few weeks and this thing is suppose to be hooked up to the cargo trailer and stock trailer for moving duties.

I felt the desire to try and bloody up a knuckle and went and remove some glow plugs randomly. See pic. Everyone I pulled was wet like this! (This was wiped off prior to picture. It had actual fuel droplets on it when pulled):mad:

That doesn't seem like too much more blowby than mine has. That sound when you pulled the cap, that did raise my eyebrows.
