injection pump removal - so confused!

Thanks guys, great info here. My confidence level in doing this job is going up and up.

Now the most critical question of all, with the future reliability of the engine riding on it - When I clean up all the parts and paint them - does it have to be IH gray? or is it acceptable to go with other colors? :D

X 3 on the line clamps. I got about 700 miles before I broke two of them. I have learned the hard way these engines are very unforgiving if you are going to be lazy with them.

I want to emphasize what Gary said...I ignored the wisdom of the collective here about the hard fuel line insulators, if you can, don't remove them to begin with but the truth is you MUST have something to keep them from vibrating against each other or they will eventually crack. It'll probably be at a bad time too. I was lucky I only lost one. I later replaced the whole set, but it did leave me at an inconvenient place on a bad day. It would have been so much better if I had just been able to jump in the truck and drive home.

I can testify to this too. It kinda hard to put the hard lines back on after taking the line clamp/insulator, idk how it happens. :dunno

Im sure icanfixall can remember my lazy ass driving around without the injection line clamps on. Shortly after putting them back on one of them developed a hairline crack that misted fuel out. Its amazing how that little crack cause the engine to run horribly. :angel:

I'm always a fan of repainting something when it's easier to do so. If you do opt to paint your injection lines, put a piece of 1" wide tape over #1 just back from the last bend to the injector. That will save whoever times it from sanding off your new paint.

VC bolts

Paint it a rainbow of truck colors. Ford BLUE IH RED Cat YELLOW Isuzu Silver.

Oldbull8, I notice something about your VC bolts, they seem to have some kind of a flatened V hold down to each bolt, looks like it would exert pressure to the vc gaskets much better, I don't have them on my 83, did you add them? or are they stock on the later model IDIs?

Nice paint job, btw

John... Those valve cover bolt spreaders are an oem item and its best to have them on the covers. They spread out the clamping force and do a great job of it. Just using a bolt will crush the thin valve cover and not make a good seal....

If you decide to paint it, nothing looks as good as the stock IH Grey in my opinion.

Mel suggested leaving a 1" strip unpainted on the #1 injector line. That is a GREAT idea, and I'll also suggest cleaning out the marks on the harmonic balancer with a scribe after painting so that the magnetic pickup that goes in the little holder above it can sense the cranks position during timing.

Don't get all this work done and NOT have the timing set properly by someone with the equipment and knowledge to do it right. A properly timed engine makes all the difference in the world. If your budget allows, now is an excellent time for a new IP and injectors too...
