Actually,I don't know if that is a 16V71.Looks more like a 16V53.THe valve covers are not 71 series style unless industrial engines had different covers. The 71 had the same as a 92.Cast aluminum with flat top and an angled down shoulder(unless it was a jake engine then it had a more inverted V shape.

cookoocookoocookooEasy there Freight LOL
Those rocker covers are the old style stamped metal....you are thinking of the alloy covers that replaced them in the 80's.

...and FYI---to my knowledge,Detroit never made 16v53's that went to production....plenty of 8V53's both n/a and turbo for military and marine.

HOWEVER---there were some 24v71's built! 2- 12V71 blocks bolted together---using 4 6-71 heads!

another tid bit---the 8V53 turbo engines in track transports actually used a spark plug in the air box;Really;Sweet;Sweet

AS for the double blowers, 12/16V 71's and 12/16V92's and 12/16V149's all have them:D

In natural asperated version such as shown they really only produced less than 500 hp at rated load speed of 1800 turns

Geo,
Those are just lil engines eh?
Havn't talked to ya in awhile, doing good?

I find 149's make more sense than 71's anyway.... overhead cams, individual cylinder heads, etc.
They just seem easier to fix.

How in Hades would you transmit power from the flywheel to the wheels?

I don't know of ANY multi-speed tranny that could handle that engine, and methinks a marine gearbox wouldn't work too well...

Got an Allison V730 tranny freshly rebuilt that would hook up to that just fine.

That way you could install the engine in the bed and just a short drive shaft to the rear, WHOOPS wait a minute is that a left or right turning engine?

Had a GM 4107 bus with a 8V71 Detroit in it. God how I loved to hear that engine roaring down the road.

Well its a plus that we have twin fuel tanks. I think I would convert the back one to hold SAE 40 motor oil so that way I would always have enough to replace the oil that leaksLOL
