Is this a clatter, a chug, or both? Advanced too much?

That actually sounds pretty good Smolkin' there is definitely a clattery noise somewhere but it doesn't sound bad to me. It will be interesting to see where your timing actually is.

The tick sounds like its coming from a bad injector or two. I would really recommend replacing them. Were you standing by the passenger side fender during the video? The tick maybe from the mechanical fuel pump as well.

Other then a possible injector tick, that does sound like a healthy motor. You could try advancing the timing a hair to see what happens, just mark where you had it before if there are any issues.

My last motor had three bad injectors that when it was cold they would let out a big cloud of white smoke when you tapped the throttle. That one ended up dieing, it ran and ran until it didnt have the compression to start anymore. The number 8 clylinder actually rotted out and had no compression. The only thing I could figure is that the bad injector had been spraying the cylinder wall causing it to recieve no oil when the piston moved up and down in the bore.

The timing may be close right now, but I am going to replace the timing adapter prob this weekend, I wish I could afford injectors too...I need to check with Test Calibration to see if they can get me BB's. When I bought the pump ($400 even) they quoted me $28 a piece, but not sure what code injectors they were talking about. Also, I'm running about 1-2 qts low b/c of the leak at the adapter, if I fill it up all the way it pours out in a couple hours, that probably isn't good and is making it noisier.

edit: just checked, BB's are $41 a piece, matched new set.

You can get injectors cheaper than that. Pensacola Diesel has them really cheap as remans, then you are rolling the dice with those somewhat, of course you live close enough to them that you could physically go in and demand satisfaction if they were bad. Russ(Typ4) sells new BBs matched set, he's out in Oregon but if you want to throw the business the way of someone in the brotherhood. What do you mean you are replacing the timing adapter? As far as I know, 6.9s did not have this since they were usually timed with luminosity probes, like my MT1480 meter. This was for pulse timing only and usually exists on later 7.3 engines and in many cases it has been accidentally removed.

Well, when I ordered a pump last August from Diesel Injection Service (Mobile) and they lied to me about having one when I went to pick it up, the owner sent me to Test Calibration (where I should have gone in the first place) and they became my go-to guys for fuel stuff. They knocked $80 off the price and are the ONLY Stanadyne shop in town, everyone sends their stuff to them anyway.
I am more comfortable getting what for me is a big ticket item from a local place I trust, and I keep hearing mixed stuff about Pensacola Diesel.

What I'm replacing is this:

Pretty sure it's called a pump timing adapter. My stock one doesn't have a port for a tach sensor, and adding a tach is yet another one of my projects with the truck. I'm attempting to kill two birds with one stone by fixing my leak and upgrading to a tach-capable adapter.

Then I apologize for the confusion! Before I found this site all I had to go off of was a Haynes manual, in which it is called a "pump gear timing adapter".
