I liked that idea, so I tried it today... Didn't work...

My family's tire shop has a plaque on the wall that says congratulations on 50 years of service to the community; that plaque is almost ten years old.

All the other shops offer all of these gimmicks and we have never offered any; we still have ten times the business of all the rest of them.

Free rotations = just another gimmick to get you up on the hoist and sell you a bunch of more stuff that you don't really need, such as brakes, shocks, etc., that will make them a lot more money than a rotate will cost, and they have to take the tires off to do this FREE service anyway.

Road hazard "insurance" is another gimmick; you don't get anything that you haven't already paid for.


I am glad that you took my advice and tested the "road-side assistance plan"; it turned out just as I expected it would.

I liked that idea, so I tried it today... Didn't work... I was only 15 miles out of town when I made the call. I didn't let any air out until I made sure that they were sending a guy out. Called Les Schwab at 4:45pm (still open - not even after business hours) and was told that I needed to get the tire to one of their stores for repair. I was pissed and as I went to head towards the store to ask why I paid for "roadside assistance", the other half had an idea... She called and within 20 minutes there was a young guy driving a blue Les Schwab truck, dressed in a clean white Les Schwab shirt pulling up behind my truck. You should have seen the look on his face when he noticed no flat, and I was sitting in the driver's seat and told him sorry to waste his time, but his company can shove their "roadside assistance" up their @$$ and that I will never buy another set of tires from them again.

I would have tipped the guy and explained what was up if he had shown up for me, but I had to get the tire to them. I even had the kids screaming and fighting in the background when I made to call. Instead, a female calls (with no fighting kids because she stepped out of the truck) and the guy is there in no time. ***?!?

no that is funny, that is also not an isolated incadent. my sister used to get stuff dirt cheap from salvage yards. she could go get things freely that my BIL and me could not touch.......

A couple of ideas, one that I think is being overlooked..... Darrin has a rear carrier on Big Ed that carries a tire and a couple of Gerry Cans... (thanks Darrin)

Also, another idea for tire storage, which this idea came from all places..... a Dodge Caravan. My neighbor has a newer Grand Caravan, and has the Stow-n-Go seats. The spare tire on these vans, not in the best place... is suspened on a cable hoist under the van between the front two seats, in about the same location as the transmission on a rear wheel drive vehicle. The winch connection is a plug in the floor. Now I am not suggesting putting the spare under the cab in the truck, but could a similar system, a cable hoist out of a newer truck, SUV or van be used and winch the spare up, under the bed in front of the right rear tire, in the same area as the "front tank" would be on the drivers side, I think there should be enought room between the bedside and the driveline, under the frame rail...... If I remember correctly some of the 70's era "Camper Special" pickups had a storage "drawer" in the same area that was accessable to the outside, just like some of the trucks that had a toolbox in the same place. (we had a 73 F-250 with one of those boxes)

Dakota, I am in California for another week. When I get home I can get the dimensions for you. I really just threw it together when I made it so I didn't write anything down at the time.

Mel and I are still questioning those Gerry cans...they were empty!!!

I think he planned to run some of Kentucky's finest back in them!
