Thing is with that motor being so weird and rare, it will be really hard, and expensive to find an overhaul kit for it.

Maybe a DD 4-53 TA ;Sweet, nothing like the sound of a stroke diesel :hail

Why not consider a 3 cyl Kobota tractor eng or the 3 cyl from a small Ford tractor. Look at the 3 cyl in a 1720 or 1920 model Ford tractor. Perfect size and not heavy. Also check the web site www.shadetreeconversions.com. He is about 40 miles from me and I have seen his mods. He has used a Massey-Fergerson which is a Perkins engine and gets about 60 mpg. Also look into the SAE bellhousing catalogue that is used to convert in stationary power units.

Lets go crazy

Input needed ! I have a 77 350 with a New Process 4sp followed by 16" driveshaft into a Brownie 3 way and 4.10 rear. Need thoughts concerning putting a 4 cyl Perkins diesel in this unit. I am also toying with the idea that a 3 cyl from a Ford tractor (3600 or 4600 ) might be a choice. This is not to be a daily driver as currently planned but if it turns out to be a "sweet ride" then who knows. whatcha think ??????:: :dunno

I woulnt go for a 3cylinder Kubota, I just dont think they have enough grunt. We have a Kubota, forget which model, with a 4cylinder diesel, and let me tell ya it is kinda gutless. Dont get me wrong put that puppy in low range it it'll pull out a 100' fallen fir tree, but still I dont think they have enough grunt for a daily driver. But our tractor is early 80's, so that may be part of it :D

I forgot all about Perkins motors, they have some good units from what I hear.

I really am thinking about doing something with that ford that I can get. It has an auxillary overdrive, which is nice, gotta figure out which kinda. I dont think the turbo on it came with that motor, so it should be pumping out a little more juice than its rated at (101hp and something like 280ft lbs of torque). It hasnt been registered in like 20+years, dont know if it will be hard to do, but it is registered as a diesel ;Sweet

Well there were Rangers that were availaible with diesels from 83 until 85. There were 2 engines; first 2.2 n/a Perkins built by mazda, later was a Mitsubishi 4d55 Turbo diesel. The Mitsu was alaso available in the little Dodge D50. So if you can find a Mitsu 4D55 and your ranger is an 80's variant, it wouldn't be too hard.

If you pull it, how much do you want for it? What transmission does it have?

I have no idea, we will have to see if I even start on this project. I think it has a C6, its a 3spd auto, havent gone under and looked at it, to much crap under the truck.
