From what I know...they are not the same hinge....one 80-86 uses an "S" shaped spring for the door and the 87-90 uses a flat plate for a spring.

I need to replace my springs..but not hinges and they don't interchange as far as I could tell.

Correct. And I haven't seen an 80-86 with a broken spring, but plenty of 89-91's. Including the passenger door on the Moosestang. So they decided to save money again, and gave us a poorer design. :backoff The hinges are different, but I do believe they are interchangeable.

Mel, I tried using 87 hinges on an 85 cab and 86 doors. No go.
Something about the hinge angles that are different. I now have a nice purdy pair of Navy Blue Mettallic hinges floating around the shop.

Both of my front doors have the crappy hinge with the broken springs. Because I drive more than I have a passenger I replaced the drivers side first.....  That was 3 years ago and the passenger hindge is still "behind the back seat"... I had so much trouble keeping things aligned that I'll have someone else do the other side.... Maybe I don't know the secrets to doing this job. I do know it gave me nothing but trouble....

Yupper I have a broken spring and roller on the 91 also-hate it when I get out and the door closes at me.

I had to replace one a while ago on my '88.
Here is the spring.
Here is the roller and pin.
They are both available from most autoparts stores in the "Help" products section but may need to be ordered in.
IIRC they were pretty inexpensive.
