Hey guys!

This 4.10 is up for sale local to me and I'm considering swapping it in so i get better towing capacity... (I need to move my tractor and project vehicles up to another property in the mountains)

Rear Axle 4.10 Ratio ID S156E Fits 99-00 FORD F250SD PICKUP 2940597

I've never replaced an axle before other than a transaxle... seems easy enough to swap them out and hook up the drive shaft. I guess it might need a new drive shaft, possibly different yokes? But that seems like an easy problem to solve... am I missing anything here?

Thanks

Your 86 is a 8-6.5" lug spacing.
Ford went to a metric spacing on the lug bolt pattern.
I don`t remember what year they went to it.
Also they went to Disk Brakes on the rear end.

Might have to modify things, but has been done.

Here is a thread I saved on doing the swap.

I believe the shock mounts are also different after 1997, and the pinion/driveshaft connection is a flange rather than a yoke. Anything 86-97 would bolt right in, but things get complicated from 1998 onwards.

To add to the complication, I believe that the vans kept the 8-6.5 bolt pattern for a few years after the trucks went metric.

Ford went to the 8 x 170mm lug spacing with the release of the 99 F-250/350 "SuperDuty" Trucks. Then there is another change to 8 x 180mm (I think) but I believe that isn't until the 6.4 era trucks (08-10)...

To add to the complication, I believe that the vans kept the 8-6.5 bolt pattern for a few years after the trucks went metric.
Correct, I am not sure which exact year they made the switch, but the vans did keep the 8 x 6.5" bolt pattern into the mid 2000's I believe, maybe it lined up with the release of the 6.0 in 03/04..... that is just a WAG......

Is there a way to swap a 10.5" using stock van parts to keep the 8.5" bolt pattern? Just wondering if there's a combo we could use with stock parts to use the new axle without having different rims on the rear.

Did you read through the link I posted above?
Lot of your questions are answered there. It is a long thread, but interesting to read.

You can redrill the hubs to the 8-6.5, and use the stock wheels. Also you can swap in the 10.25 Diff gears from what I read.

I did read it but didn't see an answer to my question regarding hubs. I would also be concerned about stress cracks bridging the holes with twice as many holes now arranged around the hub flange. So if a solution using only stock parts was available, that would be ideal.

As for the diff gears, I'm counting on them being compatible, since I have a factory Ford E-locker waiting to go into my 1986.

The van disc brakes can be swapped onto your old diff if you do the work...

One hub swap i've read that works is with the dually diffs. The pickup Dana 80 (99-04) and the van Dana 70 (99+) can swap hubs to change wheel patterns.

Thanks guys I’ll keep looking for an older one pre 1998
