Got stuck on this, needing to remove the downpipe from my ATS 085 to get to trans bolts. It looks a bit crooked, wedged to fit in a van? some sheet metal on the body was chopped way back when it was installed in the 80s. Is there a trick to it besides WD-40 (why it's wet) and a small sledgehammer? The mounting bolt for the bracket is removed and it wiggles a little with a pry bar, but won't come out from the turbo.

You dont want to hit it, it will break. This is just a slip fit, with a ring (like a piston ring) to seal. I have always had to use heat to get these loose, and then after that they dont like to stay in.....

I dont remember having to pull that to get a transmission out??

One of the bell bolts is behind the down pipe, and I need 2-3 inches of clearance to slide it back and down, currently there's maybe half an inch of clearance.

All of them I have been around were with a 4 spd, maybe that piece is different for the auto? Can you get the bolts that hold the turbo pedestal to the back of the head? If you can, shouldnt be to difficult to just pull the whole turbo.....in a van body.

But if you can get that pipe to wiggle in the turbine housing, it would probably be worth messing with that first.

I ran into the same problem on my 91 when I replaced the clutch. I have the ats 088, I ended up cutting the bolt out with a sawzall. So far it’s been fine without that bolt.
