Wow. It's been a while but I can finally say I'm finished...

I got the motor in my pickup and fired up the beginning of September. Then I had to evacuate my home due to wildfires. Came back 2 weeks later and was able to finish trying to set things up, only to find one of my balance shaft bearings was too tight and would spit the belt off. So I pulled the motor and honed the bearing, reinstalled the motor, and no more issues. Or so i thought. I put 150 miles on it and had to adjust the valves 2 times in that time. Because as soon as it got warm it had this rattle that, after a solid pull up a hill turned to a light hammering. Not good. I adjusted valves. I adjusted timing. After that 150 miles, my upper balance shaft(the other one, not the one I dressed the bearing in) seized. I was at my wit's end here. I was THIS close to pulling the motor and cutting the balance shafts to make them into stubs. Decided just to get a new bearing and install it.
Got t back together. Another 500 miles and 6 more valve adjustments.

Decided I had it. I pulled the head off. I didn't see anything obvious. At first. So I kept looking. I saw the imprint of the directional arrow in the piston top in carbon on the bottom of the head. I could see where valves had lightly kissed the pistons.

After doing a bit more research, I found out there were options in head gasket thicknesses. And the ones for a 4d55(like the gasket set I ordered) are .10mm thinner than the one I needed. After getting that squared away, I no longer have bad noises when up to temp and more pulling power. It took me long enough. But I'm happy it's done.

Right on, I'll be firing mine up this weekend. Mostly ready just a ton of small tedious stuff to finish
That's good to hear.

This was one of the most frustrating machinery-related experiences I've been through. Not just because of the extended timeline. But because throughout it all my go-to gearhead guru, my father, had been no help. He didn't think it was that bad(he never heard it when it was hammering, only "tapping") and kept telling me that I'd figure it out when it finally broke and I should keep driving it.

That solution was fine for his suburban with 300k on it and making.a weird noise in the rear end(he replaced it once it failed, as per his recommendation). But it wasn't one I was willing to accept on a brand new motor I had just spent $2800 on(between short block, head, and pump and injector rebuild).

I'm frustrated it took me so long to read through the factory service manual and read about the different head gasket specs(or remember from my VW days that that is a thing to worry about). And that I didn't ask the vendor of the motor what their recommended head gasket was(I should have bought a gasket set from them, and would have, had they offered it on their AliEx storefront). But it's done.

99 miles so far. Trouble free and more power pulling up a hill than its ever had.

My dad even commented on how smooth it sounds. Guess that good.

Now I can focus on my Kubota B7100 that I need to do a head gasket on.

Took it out on a service call yesterday up in Welches, on the highway up to mount hood. Pulled solid all the way.

Now it's time for me to learn about turbos...

My motor has a tc05-10a turbo on it. And I have had people laugh when I call and ask about a cartridge or parts.

I'm kinda partial to this turbo, mainly because it's simple\stupid. 3 bolt flange in, 3 bolt flange out, oil cooled.

I have found, though, a td05-10a for reasonable money(its original use is for a Mitsubishi 4d31t industrial OR a 4d56q in marine applications), and from my research the -05 and -10a parts of those part numbers means that it SHOULD work, numbers-wise. And neither have wastegates or water-cooling.

Any thoughts on spendig\saving my money here?

Couldn't tell you anything on turbo sizes but im sure just about any t3/t4 hybrid is going to be fun on there. Arizona Turbo & Tractor Supply used to sell reman'd turbos and rebuilds them, great deals and reviews, you might want to give them a call and/or see if you've got a similar local shop.

Well, I did a bit of research. These motors came with 2 different turbos. The tco5-10a like mine and the td04-09b. The td04 used a wastegate while the tc05(mine) did not.

The td was known to be more responsive, while the tc moves more air.

I learned the tc refers to the cartridge family(bearing style mostly) the 05 refers to size\cfm and the 10a is the spooling characteristics.

So I decided to give this new TD05-10a a shot. It's serviceable, meets similar spooling and cfm specs as mine, has no wastegate, and even has the same flange patterns.

Ordered it up on the 7th and it showed up today.

Got the old turbo out. Had to take the cartridge and snail she'll off the hot side due to some stubborn bolts.

Got the new one all clocked and bolted in, but the studs for the pipe flange are fine thread, and the new turbo has coarse thread holes. Trip to Ace to morrow and it should be golden.

Got it in.

This td05-10a comes on sooner and pulls harder than my wore out tc05-10a. And fit in just right after re-clocking.

Took it on a 65 mile run for a service call with the new turbo today, up some pretty good hills. I'm calling it. Now I can focus on front end work\alignment. And the tractor.

29 mpg over 150 miles. In the hills. Not too shabby.

I pulled 26mpg without a hood and no rear window yet, unbelievable! 130+ miles and tank only took 5.2 gallons.. cruising 60-65 certainly helps and oh yeah just now realized my front driveshaft is not connected (need to lengthen) I'd bet thats gonna take a toll on mpg

Since this project is done, I bought another project... Someone put an Isuzu 4bd1t in a 96 suburban. But it needs a tranny. So I bought it. It drove pretty sweet in 1st and 3rd(when it would shift into it...)
