Just dropped the rear tank and need some advice on cleaning it out. Tank had about 10 gallons of rusty old fuel. Previous owner had the truck 5 years and never used it so its going on 7 now. Shower head was toast so I'll be modifying that. I hooked my fuel pump to the frame and piped it into the front tank with some check valves and a filter pre pump.

Need to toss this back in before we head out Saturday.

Hi,
may I ask you how did you drop aft-axle fuel tank? Did you pull truck bed or not?
If not, then did you perform that procedure of lowering tank at angle just enough to unplug fule lines and electrical cable? Or some other procedure?
Thanks

I removed the filler neck and then both skid plates, supporting the passenger side with a jack then lowered enough at an angle to get my arm up there and remove the lines. Its annoying and tedious but doable. Make sure its empty as can be!

Everywhere has its upsides and downsides. A lot more downsides in certain areas these days

Looking at the trip, we should get into too much trouble with pricing!
You'll be passing right through my neck of the woods, I think we're at like $2.15 for diesel at the moment.

Run it out of as much fuel as possible, loosen the filler hose clamps, pull the rear strap hardware and tilt it down (a floor jack/jackstand/block of wood is helpful) and release the lines (and probably break or lose the locks) and unplug the sender and you're good to go. Just did mine and pretty sure I still have the part number for the fuel line lock tabs available if you do break yours.

I remember that too.
I also remember 35 cent gasoline and 12 cent diesel.

Diesel was cheaper back then, for the same reason it should be cheaper now.

You have to refine diesel further, to get gasoline. So less expense in making diesel.

I always heard it costs more now because of the extra refining required to remove the sulphur. No clue if that's true, but that's what I was told.

That's when the price jumped, when the low sulphur diesel started to come out.

Why didn't they design these so that most of the tedious things could be dealt with by something like coiling the lines?

You don't work on modern vehicles much do you? I avoid it when possible. I am sure you heard of the later Ford trucks where the cab has to be lifted off the frame to do any serious work on the engine?

I bought my '86 in 2014(OMG, has it really been that long!?) and was really fortunate that the previous owner had recently cleaned both tanks. Unfortunately, after he put it back together, rear-tank fuel level no longer works. So, I just fill it, drive about 200 miles or so, and switch tanks. And, diesel near me has held at about $2.19 for the last several months.

Such is life.
