The terminal on the top of my fuel filter is leaking. This seems to me a common problem.

Anyone have a procedure for fixing this issue?

My NA fires right up cold, runs for a few seconds, dies, and then I need to crank til the fuel comes back. After that runs fine. Smacks of air intrusion and I’ve replaced everything from returns lines back to the filter. Injectors are dry, the filter assembly is the only leak I can find.

I did a quick scan of the idi tech articles and nothing popped up.

My thoughts were to take the whole shebang apart, clean and then JB Weld...

Thoughts?

Is your IDI the 6.9 or 7.3?, I heard of people who got a 7.3, swap the 6.9 Fuel Filter Housing in, to solve their problem. Other then that, it's probably just an O-ring that needs to be replaced.

What people tend to do is remove the fuel heater then plug the hole with a 1/2" pipe plug

7.3 NA.

Here’s a photo.

I suppose I need to tear the whole thing out and get in on the bench to do an o-ring replacement or some such?

I just went through the same thing these o-rings will solve that problem instantly. Worst part of it is re-bleeding everything once your done. Also change your fuel filter while your at it.

There are some good you-tube videos on this that show you how to take it apart. It's somewhat of a pain. I had the same problem. Took it all apart and replaced the o-ring. About a year later it started leaking again. Someone on here said a guy (was he the one that passed away?) took his and just put jb weld over it and it never leaked again. Not wanted to go through all that teardown again, that is what I did. I took brakecleaner and cleaned it up really good. Dried it out, and then mixed up some jb weld and covered the whole thing over. Hasn't leaked, didn't need to tear it down, and it's been good for a couple of years so far.

By the way, that is your air intrusion leak causing the starting problems.

Does the fuel heater aid in cold weather starts?
In theory, yes. In practice, not really (if anything). The problem with this is the location. It's at the top of the fuel filter, on top of the fuel. Since heats rises, it's not really effective.

I don't think it would be. I think it's kind of "six of one, a half dozen of the other".
