Last year, while changing out my 1G alternator, I dropped the alternator and the charge wire touched something, shorting out the fusible link. No, I don't usually unhook the power wire until the alternator's loose and off to the side of the engine. I had gotten this one from the local Car Quest store since they had one on the shelf. Actually, it was about my third one from there over the years (gotta love those 1G alternators!). I had been running them long enough that I had forgotten that there's a difference between the ones that I'd been getting and the way that they should be. I think that there must be another application, possibly an ag application, that takes similar ones. The difference is that the area where the wires connect to the rear housing is clocked about 90* clockwise from where it should be on our trucks. The wires will stretch far enough, but they will be tight. This also puts the lug for the charge wire really close to the thermostat housing. Close enough that you can't really disconnect the charge wire while the alternator's in it's running position. This actually occurred to me while I was waiting for my roll of fusible link wire to get in last year, but I had forgotten to post it up until today. I decided to go ahead and post it up for anybody who's still running a 1G and wants to keep it that way. The beat up one with the broken housing was the one that was on my first 85 F250 when I wrecked. It had been working so I decided to keep it in case I wanted to swap the front housing and pulley and run it again. I doubt that I ever will after my 3G swap, but for some reason, I've still got it. On the clean, "new" alternator, you can see the shiny spot on the front of it where the cooling fan was rubbing on it after the nut disappeared last June while I was in Colorado.EDIT: I forgot to mention that From the same store, with the same application given, I've gotten a single groove pulley, then a serpentine belt pulley, and on this last one, I actually got a double groove pulley.

I haven't. I wasn't sure if they could be reclocked or not. That still doesn't explain the three different types of pulleys that I got on three different alternators. It also doesn't explain why my small, local parts store has them sitting on the shelf when I asked for one. They haven't been used since 1991(?) so there can't be many trucks around here that still use them.

Maybe someone ordered it to the store then changed their mind about buying it. Maybe it was the wrong amps or clock.

Possible, but three times? The second one (that the shiny one replaced) only lasted about a month so they had restocked it for some reason.
