Just wondering if any of you all have ever noticed this or if I am just being too cautious so when I start my excursion I noticed yesterday that it takes about 2 seconds for the oil pressure to build and check gauge light to go out after the motor is running. Has anyone else noticed this ?

Yes I have noticed this in my 2004 truck. The oil pressure fires the injectors AND provides oil to all of the bearings. There is a secondary oil pump (HPOP for High Pressure Oil Pump) that provides the pressure to fire the injectors. All of this does take a second or two to get to pressure when started. If there was not enough pressure, the injectors would NOT fire and thus no start. It starts and there fore you are GTG.

So today I took the excursion to town and still a bit sensitive of the oil pressure taking a few seconds I watched the pressure jump up to normal then drove 15 miles to town and got some fuel then hit the store for some 4th of July grub then went to leave and she fired right up no issues idled a few seconds while I put my seatbelt on an put it in gear an she dies :( try to start and she won't fire now I noticed while franking with a no fire it takes 3.5 to 4 seconds to get oil pressure. Could this be related? tomorrow I'll grab the scanner from work but I'm just scratching my brain trying to figure this out

Remind me please - what year engine do you have?
Do you have an OEM oil filter cap and an OEM oil filter installed?

@bismic1 it's a all stock 03 ford excursion with a 6.0 psd and just shy of 293k miles and it's a motocraft oil and fuel filters running motocraft 15-40 oil even but I am about 3100 miles into this service and was planning on doing a full service sat or sunday

I would sure be thinking about the HPOP. The pressed in ball bearing can pop out and the HPOP will suck down the low pressure oil pressure.

Before going to that extent though, be sure to pull, inspect, and clean the regulator on the low pressure oil (it is by the harmonic balancer).

You probably should verify that the oil filter drain valve will close when you push down on it (ie push down on it and crank and see if it fills in 3-4 seconds, and stays full until you let off of that drain valve plunger).

And just because I am usually detail oriented, you didn't confirm that the oil filter cap is also OEM (it should only be 1" tall when measuring from the filter housing to the bottom of the top hex nut).

Oh, and has the HPOP been replaced before?

Mine was a weird case, the hpop end plate snap ring came out, so the end plate came out, hence a big oil leak. Would still run though.

If it is your HPOP, and that is what I am thinking it is, I would HIGHLY recommend the pump from Dieselsite. I would get the stock capacity Adrenaline pump. It is expensive, but worth it. There have just been a lot of 03 and 04 HPOP failures lately (OEM ones and the parts store ones). The Dieselsite pump has a stellar record of reliability.

Interesting failure 79Jasper. Thanks for posting!

Also check your oil level, it could be burning some through several areas, as well as new underside leaks. Low oil level would do that too

Another thing to consider, oil rail plug o ring failure.

I don't think a "high side" high-pressure-oil system leak would drop the base oil pressure to the extent he describes. It is more often found to be an HPOP suction side leak. That said, I guess anything is possible.

+1 on an air test.
