Hello Y'all,
Just bought my first diesel. A 88 7.3 f250.
First question I got is what affect would straight piping have to my truck. Somebody told me it would make my truck super quiet and another that it would make it sound great.
Second question is are there anything's I can do to improve mpg besides keeping my rpms below 2000. Thanks

I'm also new to owning diesel power, it is also an '88 7.3 IH-IDI Ford.
IMO: Diesel motors purpose is work reliably, efficient/ pound/ mile. My thought on open exhaust is potential damage from relatively cold air being drawn back into the engine when shut-off.
Have you considered the Legal aspect of removing the exhaust -muffler? I see your not a California resident, but you would never get in w/o muffler. LOL

I don't have any plans on coming to Commiefornia though lol.

There is no danger In straight piping a diesel mine has been straight piped for years and it has only helped keep in mind I live in an area that is kkown .to get -30*f in the winter also mine is not too loud and also it has been to California a few times puking black and straight piped for mileage a good fuel system and a light foot will gain you lots

Just straight piping your truck will make it sound faster but in all
reality there will be little to no effect. Much like flipping the air cleaner lid
back in the old days. 50yr olds know what I'm talking about. :)

Secondly, Your fuel mileage is controlled solely by your right foot. Not a tach.

Welcome to the forum.
