I believe 250k is about typical on those pumps and the vp44s when they are treated right. Fuel quality and temperature will change that number drastically, on these style pumps its really important to not starve them of fuel pressure. That may have been what caused your pump to fail or it could have been contamination. I never opened it up since it was an exchange with bosch, but Id wager your pump failure was not typical wear and tear since something had come apart inside it.

what's the life expectancy for them Bosch pumps I know the db2 is around 100k
On the two main tdi forums you never really hear about guys needing to replace or rebuild their pumps like the idi people do. Once I got into my idi, that was one of the biggest learning curves I head to get my head around, because all I knew was tdi’s and he only time you’d read about guys changing pumps was for a larger pump/nozzle upgrade. My tdi has 235k on it and ran like a top before it was totaled.

Yep that’s pretty much what my guy at Bosch told me, it was odd to see one explode like this.

Well I was having leaking issues the head would leak while it was running so it did a bit of spinning dry I would love to know the failure of the pump as a learning curve

Me as well, but since it was an exchange pump the less I know about the pump the better, I don’t think that pump would have been rebuildable, I’m surprised it even ran.

So getting back to the effing jetta(official name at home now) got the cold beer installed and the new pulleys along with fresh 8.8 bolts where I felt needed everything came out just fine and nothing looked bad or to have any wear but I'm finally got a few to plug away on it im afraid to say it but it's going together good

does that use the same timing tools as the older rabbit engines? I happen to have them. Have a 82 Audi diesel. that sure was a good car. Haven't drove it for a few years now ,getting pretty wore out.

I'm not sure I found out my brother borrowed all of my specialty tools so I ended up just making like the cam lock out of some carefully ground flat stock and used a chain come along for the engine lift and they have been just as easy and affective as the expensive tools auctually the come along works better in my opinion

1.6 I believe. bought the car for 800.00 used it for work running back and forth so didn't have to run my trucks. Has a bad injector now , pump leaks, headlite switch doesn't work along with speedo. So parked it. Have had it for 10 yrs or so. It doesn't owe me a dime. Man would it smoke if you had your foot in it bucking wind or hills. LOL
