I tore down a spare Borg Warner 1356 to rebuild/reseal it and do the pump arm modification. Well, when I got in there, the rib that holds the pump arm was already worn through. It didn't appear that the pump had spun though. The filter hose was still attached to the filter and showed no sign of damage which I believe would be impossible if the pump had spun correct? I suppose I caught it just in time?

The inside of the case looks pretty clean though and I don't see any obvious damage. I would really like to just replace the all the seals and fix the pump arm and toss it in the truck. Is there anything else I should do while I am in there? The forks still have the inserts in them so I don't know if I should mess with them? Same for the bearings-they feel tight but there may be slight play in them. Do these bearings typically go bad? I've read several things online that say these bearings, unless they go without lubrication, typically don't need replacing. Any input is appreciated.

Judging by your description that's what I would probably do.

It wouldn't hurt to check the teeth on your low/hi slider though. If the 1356 is anything like the... 1346? Whatever @tjsea has in his truck that decided it wasn't fond of 4hi launches with a loaded turbo at the 1/8 mile strip!

There is a fix for that I’m pretty sure. Let me see if I can find it.

This guy shows one way to fix it. I was thinking that someone sold a modified “metal triangle” but I can’t seem to find it.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Speaking of transfer case how can I tell what unit I have? I pulled a ZF 42 with a transfer case out of my parts truck '89 F250 & put in my '90 F350 Dually last yr when I did my Dana 60 front swap. Never found a tag or numbers on the transfer case. I'm not familiar or savvy enough with stuff to know what to look for. Searched some on the net for info but....

Other than an oil seep where the rear case goes together everything works great.

I'm pretty sure that my 1345 does too. Now I could be wrong on this, but from my (admittedly limited) observations, a 1345 has a yoke on the back that is held on by a nut. With a 1356, the rear driveshaft has a slip yoke on the front end of it to slide in and out of the transfer case.

To my knowledge the 1356 comes in both fixed and slip yoke varieties. The fixed yoke came on the Broncos whereas the slip was on the trucks.

Ok thanks. I've only seen one 1356 that I know of for sure and it was a slip yoke style. I guess my idea didn't work very well then.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Thanks guys for the descriptive info & links. I now think I got a 1356. I crawled round under there yesterday & found 13-56#### with some other numbers embossed on the case in about 3 places as well as the pattern of the ribs seemed to fit a 1356.
Thanks.
