Hey everyone,

I get this roaring sound when I decelerate with my idi and I'm starting with the basics.

I opened up my pumpkin cover and drained the old oil. I found about 2.5 quarts in there. Gears look in good shape. Worn but good shape. About 1/4 of play in the pinion, I spun the shaft by hand while watching the yoke... Its nice and wide in there so I got a nice view of the pinion gear. Meshes great...

edit - okay you can't see the pinion in the pic but I saw it when I had my head in there lol...

So, I laid a bead of rtv on the cover and put it back on. Where the hell is the fill plug? LOL

I've got 8oz of Motorcraft LS additive to put in there, and I've got lots of 85W-140 gear oil to dump in there until full. I hope that's gonna fix my noise.

I thought it would be the dmf/smf thing that makes my truck sound like a schoolbus but I gotta try this first.

Must not have done much looking...
It's on the front left of the pinion.
Check your ujoints.

Sorry you must've taken me for an idiot. I admit to know very little regarding diesels or trucks at all. I've got some mechanical aptitude, but I learn as I go. You know, as a hobby.

The u-joints seem pretty good, I haven't taken off the driveshaft. I greased them pretty generously but haven't driven it yet. They're cheap, so they'll be next. PO told me he changed the rear bearings at some point, and I gave them the side to side shake test. Feels tight.

Everything will end up being replaced at some point... This will be an ongoing project. I enjoy it.

Anyways sorry didn't mean to tick anybody off with stupid questions... Mine was just covered in dirt and grime, so missed it completely.

Yeah, it was half sarcasm. Lol
That's the abs sensor you see. You can actually remove the sensor and dump in through there.

Awesome, thanks jasper.

I was wondering how I'm going to overfill this sucker... Hehe. I'll fill at capacity, test and see how I feel.

Also if you can warm the gear oil helps.

I've got a drill pump with lots of tubing... Should do the trick. Funny enough the drill pump was a whole ten dollars cheaper than the hand pump? I've never used it for gear oil but I'm assuming its probably going to be more fun than squeezing a piston pump a few ounces at a time.

You may definitely warm the gear oil in some hot water first.
This gear oil is thicker than cooking oil.
