Got a 2005 beetle 5sp took it to the dealer and was smoking really rich black smoke. turned out to bu the ic pipe cracked. Has anyone had this problem? And the dealer tried to say the entire warrenty was void because they said it WAS in a wreck:mad:. Now a 1000 miles later the same smoke only not quite as bad. especially at night you can see a fog of smoke in front of the headlights behind you. BTW 48k miles now, bought it in jan 07 w/35k. Anyone got any input?

How many miles are on it. My dads 98 use to smoke, when we did the timing belt we advanced the timing as far as we could while still being in spec(with a computer). We also set the egr to offroad, this cleared up almost all the smoke.

How does the car do with acceleration? When we pulled the valve cover off we found the the intake manifold was almost completely encrusted with carbon from the egr valve. This seems to be a common problem because it has happened to our 2003 as well. We pulled the intake manifold and wire brushed the inside and sprayed it with carb cleaner. It was amazing how much more resposive the vehicle was after cleaning the carbon out. After resetting the egr valve, we have yet to have a soot related problem in 2 yrs/70,000 miles.
