im going to go and get my first diesel this weekend it's a 87 f-250 6.9 with a turbo and 7.3 fuel system.I'm guessing the glow plugs aren't working right it won't start unless it's plugged in cold then it will run for a few then die I'm guessing it's getting air into the system. What else should I look for? I'm mechanically inclined just never owned a diesel

timing a diesel isn't as critical as a gasser either.
and your ignition is built in!

Personally I disagree.
I feel like you have a smaller window of degrees +/- on a diesel than you do a gasser. While on the gasser, it'll still run, on the diesel, you'll need ether to start it.

I never needed crack in a can from -9* to 15*
but my glow plug system was always on point.
a 24* variance on a gasser takes you from spitting out of the intake to spitting out of the exhaust.
sure both types have cam timing, but on a diesel you are dealing with fuel timing only, not ignition timing.
our IDI's only have 1 form of advancement. and it can be disconnected.
in a gasser you have to get initial, vacuum, and the mechanical advance correct.
in my boats I lock both mechanical and vacuum advance out, but with initial, you still need to be in a certain window.
a smaller window on diesels, I halfassed agree
its the larger window that's a B to find the fly spec lol
