hey all,

how many miles do the first gen cummins motors last?

What are some things that cause early death?

This motor i have a chance to buy is a 1990 version and has about 285k miles on it and had cam work done around 160k. He says it runs real sweet.

what are the chances of this thing running along time issue free, and what issues could i run into?

I wouldn't hesitate one bit with only 250k on the ticker - I have 250 on mine and I wouldn't hesitate one bit of throwing the family in it to drive to anywhere.

They'll go a million. There's a guy that has done 1.4 on his Dodge dually original motor, turbo, transmission, rearend. One mechanic and meticulous maintenance.

IIRC there was a guy on another site who had to replace his head gasket at around 200k and when he looked in the cylinders the walls still had the hone marks from the factory. My '93 has about 175k on it and it runs like a Swiss watch.

Known problems: KDP, marginal turbo, small intercooler. Other issues, the autos are weak and there is dissention over the quality of the Getrag 5-speed.

I tore apart an 94 ctd with 238,000 and still had hone marks on the walls.

If you tweak your injector don't expect it to last 1 million miles. Other than that they are pretty solid trucks, like someone said the autos were weak but the getrag 5 speed will handle 500k-1million miles if u stay under 250 hp.

Make sure you take care of the Killer Dowel pin, that's the biggest downfall of the 12 valve. Its an easy fix but if you dont take care of it before it fails your in a world of hurt.

The one I just sold had 500k, before I got it. I drove it like a rented mule. VE pump maxed out. No I/C, so had to watch the pyro when loaded. Won 3 of 4 truck pulls, and the 1 I lost was my fault, not because the truck got beat.

Not many 1-ton 4x4's I know of, that will pull 16+mpg, in town.
