i just bought my truck a few weeks ago and it did not have an owners manual, and i have no idea how much the two tanks hold. Can anyone tell me? My guess is 15-20 gallons each but i would like to know for sure, and i would also like to know if they are both the same size.
thanks,
paul

on the 80-86 they are both 19 gallons even though shaped totally different. Not 100% sure on the 87-91s

According to the 1988 manual (diesel supplement) the tank capacities are:

Standard- 20.0 US gallons
Auxiliary- 18.2 US gallons

What the guy said about 20 and 18 in his manual is probably correct. It most likely leaves 3 gallons in the bottom of the tank when the pickup starts sucking air. So that would jive with the 17 and 15 mentioned.

My 89 manual tells me my from tank is 19.7 and the rear tank is 18.2. If you run the tanks empty and find to fill them up only takes a small amount you probably have the broken suction heads. Thats when you run out of fuel when the gauge tells you there is 1/4 tank left.Sadly this is where the broken suction pickup is at in the tanks.

This isn't a direct answer to the question at hand, but it may be an indication, and it may be useful to some people. This is from an Owners Manual for the 1986 trucks.

I've gotten no more than 17.5 or so into a completely empty tank. And I also have dropped and emptied a tank before; with a proper pickup, you /might/ have 1/2 a gallon in there when it sucks air(on a flat road that is - go uphill and it'll suck air earlier).
