I had a DT360 in my garage for a while, and there is a lot of confusion over the DT360 vs 5.9 Cummins size.
The actual engines are within 1/2" in every direction.
The main difference is that the DT accesorries on the front of the engine are HUGE; they take up about 2" more room than the Cummins.

I havent actually broken out a tape measure before, but the 6b's do look considerablly smaller. We had a complete 6b sitting in the shop one time, and it wasnt to big. I did a DT the week, and just looks wise, they just look a ton bigger.

A swap like that is a lot more time consuming then you may think, so it's easy for life to get in the way. There's a few dt466 swaps out there between all the forums.
I looked into at one point, but was seriously considering a dt360. A 466 is massive but would be awesome to see working in a pickup.
Then I came to my senses, and realized my 7.3 is more than I need, and I've always preferred v8s in light duty applications anyhow. Slap a turbo on and I'll call it good

It’s beast of a swap. I made a few big mistakes along the way. I still have the motor and transmission and it may find its way into my dump truck at some point.

The DT466 into a Travellette that is in PA is still moving along slowly…

he is almost done with it from what I saw in a video he made a few months ago.

The REALITY is that it’s a bit more than a lone shadetree mechanic such as myself should have ever attempted.

BUT, because I did attempt it - I did learn some things and acquired a few skills that I still use from time to time.

Thank’s Brian…. I thought it was.

At least the other projects you have been working on have been cool too…..

96 as I remember was the first year IHC installed the electronic garbage on these engines.
I drove a 95 4900 International with a 5-spd 2-spd Air Shift Diff. for around 10 years before I retired.
Was a good running engine, had 150K miles when I retired.
Think it was 210 HP.

The other crew got a 96 and the foot feed was just a switch with wires to a big box on the side of the engine. Drive by wire I guess. Same trans and diff.

I never did like the 96, glad that crew had it, the 95, to me was a better driving truck.

It`s a big engine, not too sure how it would be shoe horned under the hood of my 86. :smash:

Well, this thread is titled "DT466 realities", and the reality that this engine swap is too much for even a decent mechanic is far too real. I just figured he was almost there at the hardest part.

I seriously want to put in a DT466 in my 88 F350 Dually but it really is discouraging to see many individuals more capable than me and with more resources always have incomplete projects. Far too many of em. After seeing Deboss' progress on his F350 CAT 3126 project I really wanted to kick the project into gear, but man this massive engine is alot. I thought a 3 in body lift, a notched firewall, front engine mount cross member, and a decent amount of frame fab is what was needed - plus some other little things of course. But if that was the case, there would be many more of them out there.

I think I'm going to settle for a DTA360 since I know exactly how to do it and there's plenty of other builds in forums. The only thing I dont like is how seemingly everyone calls it a "little" motor, and I don't understand why. It's technically bigger than a 5.9 Cummins but people still seem to think the DT is a small engine. But I dont care; people name-calling my engine wont do anything to its stellar performance and my happiness with it.
