blew a return line now will only start for 3 seconds or less

1993 f-250 na 7.3, on way to lake to meet family I havent seen in years, they can only be there today of course. Pulling out of driveway and smell diesel. open hood, there is diesel pouring out of a return line that had popped off nipple, there was no clamp on it which is weird because I know I put one on, anyway, fix it go to start it and it runs for 3 seconds then it shuts off like you turned the key off. I've tried everything from purging the filter to cracking the lines. nothing works. any ideas?

also the longer it sets the longer it will stay started for.

changed the fuel filter and filled the front tank, then switched from back to front. Problem solved, think that the valve was stuck halfway due to crud sucked into the valve when the front tank ran nearly dry due to the diesel pouring out of the return line or maybe it was the filter who knows but we are on our way to the lake.
